Lately, it seems the intimate spark between you and your
partner
is dim at best. Connecting positively has been tacked onto the long list of chores to do rather than being part of your
relationship
that fuels the fire. Maybe you're struggling with conflict, balancing life, knowing each of your needs, or a sex life that feels pleasurable. At best, you find yourself in an unsatisfying status quo. At worst, you find shame, anger, guilt, or sadness fighting over who takes center stage between the two of you. Regardless, you and your
partner
can no longer find each other in your intimate moments.

I work with individuals and
couples
experiencing a wide range of issues such as depression, anxiety, life transitions, or noticing continued patterns of conflict. Whatever is bringing you to counseling, we can work together to discuss what might benefit you the most at this time in life. Your willingness to seek help opens the door to discovering how you might create the change you wish for yourself, whether you're looking to explore something that has been deeply impactful, better understand yourself, learn how to effectively communicate and feel connected in your relationships, or feel like 'you' again.

[ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS] Do you question the
relationship
you're in? Do you wonder why conflict sometimes feels so difficult? Does it sometimes feel like there are patterns there that you just can't see or understand, but that maybe if you could, they wouldn't have to continue? Sometimes we reach a point where we are ready for change; where what we have been doing in our life and in our relationships, doesn’t feel good anymore. I will help you get clear on what the patterns are AND where they come from and how to shift them.

I base treatment off of current research and science based approaches to healing, and work closely with the other health care providers on an individual's team to help providers better understand the complex

For the first 15 years of my career I worked as a family counselor in inpatient alcohol / drug treatment centers. In 1994 I went back to school for a graduate degree in social work. Since then I have been working with individuals,
couples
and families. I think it's very healthy to use counseling whenever it's needed throughout our lives. Much of the work I do is with
couples
and families who are struggling with communication - which is the bridge to close relationships. I also work with addiction recovery, anxiety, depression, workplace relationships. Feel free to call for help.

I practice from a holistic and integrative approach to incorporate emotion-focused, attachment, and multi-cultural perspectives. I support adult individuals and
couples
in learning the skills to better connect with themselves, others and the world around them. Therapy can be an occasion of self-exploration and mental/emotional healing. With the use of mindfulness and present processing, we can create a space for deep introspection. This allows for increased awareness and understanding of the roots of your unique behaviors, emotional/thought patterns, and
relationship
dynamics.

People seek therapy for all kinds of reasons. Many are looking for support as they navigate current situations, decisions, and relationships in their lives. Many are looking for change. Change in their internal experience and emotions, change in their pattern of thinking or behavior, or change in their relationships with themselves or others. I enjoy working with clients to understand how their unique experiences have shaped who they are and inform their life in the present.

With 20 years experience in the human service realm, and 12 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Psychotherapist, I have come to believe that what is most essential in therapy is the therapist-client connection. The first step is to develop a positive, mutually respectful working
relationship
. Typically, I meet with you 2-3 times during which we discuss what is going on. This will help us get to know each other, and understand the basis for our work moving forward including your goals, frequency, fees, and other questions/concerns you may have.

I once heard it said that "Mental health problems need to be viewed as proof of our humanity, not an exception to it." Such problems in today's world often present themselves as anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, isolation, stagnation, trauma,
relationship
strain, etc. and can interfere with one's ability to live rather than simply exist. Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, then a counselor like myself may be able to help you through it.

I am a somatic and attachment, or
relationship
, focused in my approach.
I believe at the core of each of our experiences in life is our felt sense of feeling safe or unsafe in relationships and situations. I also believe that our nervous system is inherently linked to how we are responding to people & situations. The acknowledgement of our nervous system requires us to connect to our body & become an active observer of how we are managing or coping while being in the world. This process is focused on initially helping people begin to find things that make them feel better & resourced & then moving towards the "hot button topics" once we have reached a more resilient place in our systems.

My aim is to help you accept, understand and love yourself; while also encouraging personal growth, authenticity and wellness. One of my areas of specialty is healing relationships. Most people struggle within an important
relationship
at some point in life. I help people navigate these challenges and transform their most important relationships (romantic or not & with others or with yourself). My goal is to support you in your unique process of healing, growth, and increased well-being. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, the most successful form of
relationship
therapy, in my work with individuals, youth, adolescents, and
couples

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
