Life can be challenging! I believe we were not made to go through it alone. You may need support coping with everyday stress or healing from a significant trauma. Maybe your tools no longer work the same and you want to try something new. You may want to gain more insight into how your physical, mental, and spiritual health are connected. Maybe you want someone to share your story with or support your personal growth journey.

Imagine therapy as renovating a house. You’ve got some rooms that could use a touch-up, maybe a few areas needing structural work, and the occasional leak to patch up. It can feel daunting, like taking on a renovation project without a blueprint. But rest assured, when you step into my office, it’s like hiring a seasoned contractor—I’m here to help you navigate the renovation process with expertise and a sprinkle of humor. The best part? I’m not here to swing the hammer for you. Think of me as your project consultant, offering guidance and support as you tackle each room of your life’s house.

Are you tired of feeling constantly worried or held back by fear or negativity? I specialize in working with clients who feel stuck in their thoughts and habits. It's truly inspirational observing clients move into the change process and start living the lives they've imagined. My first priority as a therapist is helping clients feel heard and understand. Having a safe, confidential space to discuss your thoughts and feelings is the first step to feeling better. My second priority is to utilize an evidence-based treatment, often Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, to help clients learn skills they can use outside of my office.

Are you feeling like the weight of the world is too heavy to bear, or like you're trapped in a fog no one seems to understand? Maybe you're struggling with feelings of depression, anxiety, self-harm, or even thoughts of ending your life. Sometimes, life can feel like it's spiraling out of control, whether it's because of a major life change, a tough breakup, difficulties at school, or the overwhelming grief of losing someone to suicide. It can feel impossible to navigate these challenges alone, and that’s where I come in.

I believe that psychotherapy is an active process resulting in clarity and change. It can help identify ineffective patterns of thinking and behavior, which may create stress, emotional problems, stress related medical problems, addiction problems, and/or relationship problems. Sometimes the work can be difficult but can also be profoundly rewarding and life changing. I believe in the power of positive change and would love to help you turn your stress into a life balance.

I approach each client with the careful unpacking of present distress—whether symptoms arise from an unexpected crisis or loss, a difficult transition, or erosion due to long-term suffering. I form strong relationships with clients to explore these present concerns while integrating the past and building insight. Many of my clients seek support in navigating difficult emotions; reworking frustrating patterns; strengthening relationships; facing places of tension; and finding greater satisfaction in their lives.

Starting counseling can be likened to setting off into the woods, unsure where the path leads but hoping to find clarity in the journey. The right counselor can help you navigate the brambles and find the path again when you lose your way. I enjoy working with adults and young adults who are struggling on their path, whether from depression, trauma, loneliness, or simply the weight of life. I specialize in helping folks who are self-critical or perfectionistic find freedom from their harsh inner voices. One of the hardest things to do in our society is care for ourselves, but I truly believe we can get there together.

You are deserving of the time and space it takes to heal and grow. Many of us find ourselves 'surviving' rather than 'living' at times; mindlessly wandering day-to-day questioning our purpose, wondering where the passion has gone. Whether it’s due to a major life adjustment, depression, anxiety, grief, or simply feeling stuck. If you are navigating a difficult moment or a recent challenge, know that you can expect a safe, confidential environment to explore your thoughts and emotions. Together, we can work toward finding your path to healing and renewal.

Hi I am Amanda Behrendt, formerly Amanda Crawford. My life's journey has led me here to a career in helping others. I graduated from Montana State University with a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling. My ideal client would be an adolescent or an adult who is ready to make changes or a parent/caregiver or soon to be parent who may be struggling with all of the challenges of parenthood. Counseling is a partnership but can only result in growth if the client is ready to make changes and is ready to allow for growth to occur.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
