Sexual Abuse Therapists in Arlee, MT
I have extensive experience working with survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
I believe that psychotherapy is an active process resulting in clarity and change. It can help identify ineffective patterns of thinking and behavior, which may create stress, emotional problems, stress related medical problems, addiction problems, and/or relationship problems. Sometimes the work can be difficult but can also be profoundly rewarding and life changing. I believe in the power of positive change and would love to help you turn your stress into a life balance.

We all develop ways of coping with difficult experiences, and those strategies often serve us well for a time. But sometimes what once kept us safe starts to keep us stuck, leaving us anxious, numb, or caught in patterns we can't seem to break. Therapy can help get you unstuck and back to living life on your terms. I specialize in complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, and attachment wounds. My work is deeply informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), and I am Level 2 trained in IFS and trained in EMDR.

I approach therapy from a trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive framework; I understand that we are all impacted by our intersecting identities and the environments that shape us, and that our identities and environments grant us relative privileges. No Availability Monday or Tuesday as of July. I’m Elizabeth, a licensed therapist based in Missoula, Montana, offering telehealth services to people across the state. Even though it can feel isolating at times, we’re rarely alone in our struggles. Stress, trauma, and old wounds can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves and those around us. I believe that our unique values, beliefs, and cultivated sense of purpose are the roots to reconnect us to who we are and how we wish to experience life. Taking time to invest in ourselves through introspection is a radical act in the world we live in.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
