Working with those who struggle to overcome the trauma of abusive relationships has been my life dream. However, trauma comes in many forms and leaves ugly scars that wreck havoc on our lives, but it does not have to control our lives. We can be overcomers! Working from a Mindfulness/CBT and person centered perspective allows us change the way we think about our past and regain control of our future.

It is one of life’s greatest honors to come along-side people who are seeking personal growth, adjusting to life changes, or working through life’s difficulties. My desire is to join others and create a trusting, safe, and understanding space to help them achieve their vision. I integrate a person-centered perspective with Cognitive Behavioral and Choice Theory in our work. Our work together may take many steps. Just stepping out to someone may be a first step in addressing life’s concerns. Another step may be moving into willingness then to action. Other steps may include self discovery, or celebrating or adjusting to life changes.

You need a therapist! Honestly, everyone does — whether you’re in the middle of a crisis or things are going relatively well. I chose this field because I deeply believe in it. Therapy has made a meaningful difference in my own life, and now I’ve found my calling in offering that same support to others. I work with both teenagers and adults, offering a compassionate space to explore emotions, relationships, and past experiences.

Navigating intense and unpleasant emotions can be challenging, holding us back from what really matters. These emotions may lead us to avoid situations or activities that hold significance, while simultaneously diminishing our motivation, leaving us feeling stuck. My mission is to help in these moments, working with patients to develop effective emotional and behavioral skills, identify valued directions, and take steps toward a meaningful life. I prioritize a collaborative and active therapeutic process in which we work together to develop treatment goals and clear, definable expectations to reduce suffering and promote wellness.

As we move throughout our lives, there are instances in which we find ourselves experiencing feelings that can be hard to describe, let alone understand. Mood changes, life transitions, trauma, loss, and self-esteem issues are just a few of the elements we encounter in our quest to have a fulfilling life. Learning how to optimistically cope with or eliminate these feelings is a daunting task, but with the right effort and determination, the goal is attainable.

You find yourself worrying more and more about every little thing. Things that other people seem to handle without much thought at all take up way too much space in your head. Sometimes these worries make your chest feel so tight, like there’s a heavy weight pressing down on you. Your heart pounds, your stomach in knots. You feel so scared so much of the time. Lots of times you’re not even sure what you’re scared of, you just have this underlying sense of fear. It’s getting harder to do things because you’re worried you’re going to freak out and embarrass yourself. You’re so exhausted so much of the time, but you can’t relax.

You might feel stuck in patterns you can’t seem to break—whether from recent change, long-term stress, or a sense that things “should” be fine but just aren’t. Maybe past therapy didn’t meet your needs or didn’t feel effective. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. My style is compassionate and straightforward. Many of my clients are high-functioning but internally overwhelmed—exhausted from trying to hold it all together. I help them untangle what’s going on beneath the surface so they can feel more grounded, more present, and more like themselves again. I’d be honored to walk alongside you!

Hi, there! I am Charity Gordon, a licensed professional counselor. I love to form a unique relationship with each of my clients, centered around their unique needs and strengths. I focus on teens, adults, seniors - individuals and couples counseling. We seek counseling because we have been in pain – usually for a while. After trying to ignore or numb the pain, some of us may say to ourselves, “This is not working. I need help,” which are both brave and scary statements to make. My desire is to provide a safe place for people to explore their pain and find their own unique strengths and solutions for healing.

I enjoy working with individuals from all backgrounds. I always learn more about others as well as myself from each client I meet which I value as an amazing opportunity. I've never met a client who didn't cause change and personal growth in myself after meeting them. I have experience working with LGBT+ persons, college-aged students, substance abuse/addiction clients, and individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. I use a Person-Centered approach alongside mindfulness/meditation and cognitive-behavioral techniques to facilitate personal growth and healing.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
