I recognize that making the decision to contact a therapist is difficult for some therefore, my goal is to make the process as comfortable as possible. I work in a relaxed, informal manner that is collaborative in nature. I often use humor in my therapy sessions and take every possible measure to ensure that my office is a safe place for clients to freely cry or express anger as they need. Finally, I work from an integrative perspective that draws from a variety of theoretical approaches as I tailor my approach to the needs and preferences of my clients.

Life gets hard for all of us at times and sometimes we just need help finding our way back to our true self. I love working with people and helping them find their own inner strength and establishing a loving relationship with themselves. This is what brings us back to understanding how precious and uniquely God made each of us. Out of this comes the return of joy and beginning of relationships with others in more healthy ways.

You feel overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out. There’s at least one area of your life where you experience thoughts like “I’m not good enough" or "I'm a failure." These thoughts might be in the background all the time or they might only pop up sometimes (spending time around certain people, going home to visit family, working another day in that job you hate, or when bad memories get stuck on a repeating loop). Whatever it is that triggers these thoughts, they make you feel awful.

Trauma, sadness, anxiety, concentration problems, grief, and challenging behaviors - like defiance and temper tantrums - are often difficult for both caregivers and children alike. They contribute to stress, feelings of isolation, and problems at school, home, and in the community. When left untreated, these issues can also lead to long-term physical and mental health challenges. My aim is to empower children, teens, and families to create the change they wish to see in their lives. By enhancing resiliency, not only do we work to address current problems, but develop the tools to better cope with future challenges.

You want to be a confident mom who enjoys her child, but there are so many things that get in the way. Maybe you and your partner have been struggling to get pregnant or you have had multiple losses. Are you pregnant and worrying about everything? Are you a first-time mom or a mom of multiples just trying to figure out your new "normal?" All of these phases of motherhood can bring different struggles and feelings of overwhelm. You should be able to honestly process your experience of motherhood without cultural pressures that say being a great mom should look a certain way.

Being unable to meet our goals is disappointing. Not knowing why is devastating. We seek answers on the outside and look to others for the "right" and the "wrong" of the situation, but everyone is different. Everyone has different approaches, and everyone has inner resources. The problem is not that you are flawed, incapable, or unable to achieve your goals. The problem is that you're simply having a little trouble accessing your strengths. Whether your issue is related to connection, depression, anxiety, or other life stressors, I am here to listen, to see you, and to understand. I am here to help.

Navigating transition and uncertainty alone can be daunting and generate fears that keep us stuck. We can feel trapped in our heads, and whether change is something we are actively pursuing or is a condition we feel is forced upon us, it can be difficult to find a way out, especially all on our own! Therapy can be a place to unburden ourselves and share our minds with someone who can provide an outside perspective and help us move forward with purpose. It can also be especially helpful for people who struggle with vulnerability and shame and provide a safe space to express and process emotions and struggles.

I see children ages 4 and up, teens, adults, and couples. I seek to provide a collaborative, empathetic, and safe environment where clients can work toward their goals by accessing their own inner resources and gaining skills including emotional awareness and regulation, self-compassion, communication, and self-understanding. I use an array of theoretical approaches and seek to treat each child, teen, or adult with the evidenced-based model that best suits their personality, needs, and developmental level.

People often lack information and resources or are too close to a problem to have a useful perspective on the situation. I love working with people who feel " stuck" or are bearing burdens that overwhelm them. Often, people have been thrown a “curveball” in life and need someone to come alongside them who can handle their difficult issues respectfully and confidentially. I feel it is a privilege to work with people in these dark and confusing places.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
