I also incorporate DBT into individual sessions and use other modalities of therapy such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing as appropriate.
On the surface it looks like anger or constant irritation, but beneath the turbulent current of destructive behaviors are emotions like sadness and grief, pain, sorrow and fear. Anger is much more preferable if a lot of your life you have felt powerless or helpless. As you might be figuring out, the power of intense, uncontrollable anger only leads to self-destruction and can deeply hurts others. Self-destruction can look a lot like being stuck, resistance to change even when miserable, using substances, or being undisciplined. It can feel lonely.

In the midst of difficult times and challenges, we find opportunity. I believe that the moments we are pushed out of our comfort zone allow for personal growth and healing. I pull from several different approaches including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I find that this creates a unique counseling experience for each client and provides a collaborative environment to explore.

When life gets difficult and feels heavy, my job is to provide support and a space for individuals to come as they are and leave feeling understood. It is when a person feels safe and understood, that they are able to do the hard work of self reflection, change, and growth. I work collaboratively with my clients to bring awareness to their thought and behavioral patterns so that they can identify and obtain the resources they need to feel more satisfied in their lives. I strive to empower my clients to see the resilience and strength within themselves.

I am equipped with a variety of therapy models and strategies for helping individuals and families. Along with these “clinical” tools, I understand the power of providing an empathetic ear. For me, counseling is a collaborative process that involves building a confidential, unique relationship. Through this relationship, I believe it is my role to help you understand yourself and the world around you better; focusing on thoughts, feelings and behaviors that impact you and your relationship with others.

Life is unpredictable and at times can be very uncomfortable. It is during these times, when we look for a safe place so that we do not have to feel alone - either with our thoughts, feelings, or the decisions we have to make.

Often the weight of the world can feel all-consuming and everyday tasks can come with fear and avoidance. Perhaps even the thought of reaching out to begin therapy ignites feelings of dread. However, deep down, you know you deserve better – because you do! I would be honored to navigate the anxiety, the stress, the sadness, and more with you. Together, we will build upon the strengths you already hold inside, and work to understand the thoughts and feelings that come with everything else.

I help adults and adolescents who are dealing with depression, anxiety, life stressors, chronic illness, and relationship concerns. Through my clinical work, I understand that living with mental health symptoms impacts everything one does in daily life. Sometimes the result might be irritability and sadness, while at other times things can feel overwhelming and anxiety inducing. With specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), health psychology and mood issues, I help clients identify their unique needs and establish achievable goals.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
