Therapy does not have to be a beatdown. Healing and growth can be demanding, exhausting, and have high stakes. Having support, a clear plan, and reliable evidence-based approaches adapted to your unique situation can sustain hope through the hardest times and bring changes that feel impossible within reach. You are the expert in your own life. Change is most meaningful and lasting when we are supported in discovering our own insights and solutions within the safety of compassionate relationships. My first goal is to help create a safe place for you to have a voice and access your natural capacity for healing.

You never imagined spirituality or faith could produce heartache and turmoil in your life. Something that once invoked peace and strength for you, perhaps now prompts questions and uncertainty. It is ok to reevaluate what you believe, and determine how your current values fit into your present life situation! Sometimes new experiences, personal growth and increased awareness can shed light on how your old thoughts, feelings and emotions are no longer serving you well. Maybe you are struggling with how to handle others’ responses to the changes you have made in your life.

You love your partner and don't want to end up divorced, but you're scared. Deep down you wonder, is this all there is? You are frustrated that you keep having the same fight. You wonder if things will ever get better. Maybe if you learned how to communicate, things would get better? But you do fine communicating with everyone else. How is it that your partner knows just how to push your buttons? You feel hurt and frustrated so quickly. You don't know how to tell them how much you miss them and long for that connection. There just doesn't seem to be much energy left for you or your relationship, including intimacy.

You don't have to struggle alone. Let's work together to identify and understand what may be blocking you from feeling better. Acquire the tools needed for a fulfilling quality of life and for healthier relationships. Often, past and current issues can get in your way or cause excruciating internal conflict. I listen with empathy, with non-judgement, and help to empower individuals in areas where they feel stuck, exhausted, or defeated. You deserve to enjoy life! Give me a call, and we'll work through the blocks together. (Finding a therapist can seem overwhelming. Let's talk to see if your search ends here!)

I see therapy as a beautiful partnership: You are the expert on you and your life as well as whatever issues you bring to each session; whereas I am the expert when it comes to knowledge and skills, etc. I truly believe that you have the strength within you to overcome anything that is standing in the way of your healing, happiness, growth, relationships, and success. My job is to provide you with the experiences that discover or rediscover that strength. My purpose is to empower you with the tools and skills that you need along the way. I am dedicated to you and your process and will do what it takes to lead you through it.

Clients coming from a faith background of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) often find it valuable to work with someone who understands the teachings and culture of the church.
You've likely done so much to try and fix things, but self-help isn't cutting it. This is why I tailor therapy to you and focus on giving you my full attention. I know each person is unique, with varying experiences and circumstances. I don't have any canned speeches, and I get down in the thick of things with you. Because our minds, bodies, and contexts are interconnected, I assess wholistically for what might be most helpful. I use therapy to create new experiences that build a sense of empowerment and compassion for yourself. Sometimes we need to change our minds first, and sometimes our behaviors, and we experiment with both.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work together effectively, but, especially for those whose concerns relate to their religion or cultural background, a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond, even if they do not have an extensive history with or understanding of their client’s background before therapy begins.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Church of Christ/Latter Day Saints values?

Each individual brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of therapeutic modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition such as LDS that strongly influences the conduct of everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process.

Why might someone feel comfortable with an LDS-attuned therapist?

While qualifications and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. It is wise to find a therapist who is responsive to your questions and concerns and with whom you feel you can establish a rapport. A therapist who is sensitive to LDS values and beliefs and the role they play in the lives of Church members can offer Mormon clients a welcome sense of safety, assurance that their community and culture will be understood, and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, all of which support the therapeutic process.

How do I recognize a good LDS therapist?

LDS therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Mormon principles and values. They have an understanding of the culture and the important role the Church plays in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of emotional difficulties those raised in the faith can be prone to. Like all effective therapists, a good LDS therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of everyday life.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Mormon/LDS therapists?

The directory of LDS therapists includes therapists who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information; these individuals would not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with LDS clients and/or communities, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
