Sometimes we feel lost, angry, or sad about our romantic relationships. I have been using the Gottman Method for couples therapy for 7+ years. This method is based on extensive research on what tools "master couples" use to have successful relationships.

My clients are often survivors of trauma, women, and queer people that are curious about how their experiences have impacted them and come to me to help regulate their nervous systems and begin to accept and heal all parts of themselves. I enjoy working with relationship issues, gender, sexuality, identity, and helping folks restore wholeness after surviving traumatic and upsetting experiences, particularly narcissistic abuse or emotionally immature caregivers. In our work together, we will consider how your nervous system has been impacted by your life experiences and help you move into a space of deeper regulation and self love.

All change is possible. Whether you are recently finding yourself stuck in an unhealthy pattern or have had more long term difficulties with depression, anxiety and unhealthy relationships, it is possible to create a more fulfilling life. I think that it is important to work with concrete strategies, developing healthy habits and coping mechanisms to address present day difficulties, while also addressing deeper issues. The focus is on creating healthy and lasting change. Finding the right therapist for you is key. I believe in identifying and supporting existing strengths while encouraging growth in whatever areas you seek.

Are you feeling stuck? Maybe you feel stuck in the past or present. Maybe it's hard to feel hopeful about the future. It's easy to become trapped in painful memories and negative experiences. A negative experience could be one life changing event or many smaller events that accumulate over time. I specialize in treating people who have experienced trauma. Trauma takes many forms but always takes a toll. Trauma can make you feel overwhelmed, insecure, and hopeless. Trauma can make you forget who you used to be.

You are not the problems you are dealing with. The fundamental belief that guides my practice as a psychotherapist is that all of us are worthy, lovable and creative beings capable of thriving and sustaining meaningful relationships. But there are times when we may lose sight of that. Perhaps you have been functioning well for years, but something has happened to upset your equilibrium or temporarily overwhelm your ability to cope. Perhaps you have been harboring feelings of inadequacy your whole life. In either instance, I can help reacquaint you with your strength and purpose, and innate worthiness.

Do you somehow feel like you just don't fit into your life? People I work with often feel like misfits, even though - from the outside - they may appear to be doing just fine. I help people see through their trances of unworthiness, shame, distrust, and inferiority. These trances often stem from identifying with outdated stories from the past; stories that often have deep roots in the mind, heart, body, and spirit, which take time to unearth and unravel. I offer a safe, sacred space where these stories and early traumas - that are showing up today as persistent "problems"- can be explored, understood, and ultimately released.

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, your past, your present, or your future, you don’t have to do it alone. A shift in perspective can profoundly affect how we feel and what we are able to do, or stop doing, in our lives. Talking with someone who is both objective and 100% on your side can help you see things from a new angle and move forward in new ways, with someone who cares standing behind you.

Life can be hard and things happen that you never would have expected. But you don't have to go through it alone. Whether you are experiencing changes in your life, relationship difficulties, or struggling with mental health concerns, I am here to support you and I believe that there is hope. Therapy can be a great space to gain insight and experience interactions with others and yourself in a new way. When we are able to understand ourselves and attune to our emotions, we are better able to make the changes we want to see in our lives and begin to thrive.

There's nothing quite like the security of close connections. When those connections are strained, so is your sense of safety. If you’re like many of us, the past several years of pandemic and political divisiveness shook up so much, we can’t see our world as we once did. “Being yourself” may feel like a tall order if it threatens your relationships. You need a space with another human being whose job it is to know and understand you from a place of curiosity and compassion. A space where you can question your beliefs and get clear on who you are without the fear of being condemned.

Personal change and growth come from an encouraging, supportive, safe, compassionate, and empathetic environment where an individual can discover oneself and grow. Are you finding those coping mechanisms which once worked for you no longer are? Do you struggle to find a connection to yourself or others? Are you finding yourself still struggling with things that happened long ago and you don't understand why? Having the courage to work on one’s relationship to self and others can be powerful, deeply healing, and perhaps one of the most loving actions one can do.

I work with people using the model of codependency/immaturity described by Pia Mellody of The Meadows. Looking at the five core issues of self-esteem, boundaries, reality, dependency, and moderation informs me as my clients "get their histories straight." In other words, I help people understand just how they have gotten to their current circumstances. Codependency, 12-step recovery, sex and pornography addiction, chronic depression and anger management are some of the areas in which I specialize.

If you're reading this, you're searching for something. You could be in intense crisis or have a desire for personal growth. Do you need the nonjudgmental, listening ear of someone outside of your everyday life? Maybe you want relief from depression and/or anxiety. Perhaps you have recently been through a difficult life event or significant loss? Maybe you are simply trying to navigate a developmental transition. Are you struggling with relationships? Are you feeling alone and isolated? Therapy can be intense and uncomfortable. At the same time it's incredibly validating, rewarding, and life saving/changing if you put in the work.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Pasadena?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
