Being a mom is agonizing when your
child
’s struggling. You’ve done your best and don’t know what else to do. Love mixes with pain and it feels like your heart is breaking. Sometimes kids get clinging, tearful and whiny. Sometimes they get rude and disrespectful. Sometimes they meltdown because they can’t hold it together. Sometimes they’re anxious and sometimes they’re depressed. Whatever you’re facing, it’s hard. I remember. I’m a mom. I got the looks, the unkind remarks in the grocery store. It hurt. There were times when I lost my temper and felt the mom guilt. And I discovered a way to alter the course of our story for good.

Wouldn't it be nice if
children
and teens came with an instruction manual? Raising
children
can bring a roller coaster of emotions and challenges but you're not alone! As a therapist and mother myself, I recognize the impact that
children
and teens behavioral and mental health concerns can have on them and their families. Behavior communicates their feelings, thoughts and needs. When it becomes challenging and maladaptive it's important to connect with them and uncover what they are trying to express. I believe that you are the expert on your family and your participation and support is an integral part in the treatment process.

I believe
children
have an innate ability to grow in a positive direction. The
child
-therapist relationship is the element that encourages healing, where the
child
feels safe, supported, and is able to make those changes that lead to growth through exploring self (experiences, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors). When we meet a
child
's need, rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom. I focus on possibilities, strengths, and value differences through direct and indirect practices.

If you are tired of feeling stuck, frustrated, overwhelmed, anxious or just unsure of where your emotions are, therapy can help! Ruminating, negative and intrusive thoughts can control our lives and make us feel helpless. Therapy can help with recognizing these thoughts and emotions and what they mean to you. "Knowing yourself" is the goal in treatment, so you can understand the feelings and reactions to improve your self-esteem, coping skills, and feelings of self-worth. I enjoy working with people of all ages, including
children
8 and up to do all of this. Everyone can benefit from a therapeutic relationship. Let's do this.

"All behavior is communication" and my goal is to help parents, kids, and teens understand the emotions behind their actions. Emotions may be expressed through lack of motivation, aggressive actions, refusal to participate in activities, use of drugs or alcohol, self-harm or having negative beliefs about themselves. I can work with you and your family to learn healthy communication and coping skills to deal with today's world.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
