Life can get pretty hard sometimes. Family issues, problems at work, coping with loss and the many stresses of life in general can cause difficulties that may have us asking questions like "What should I do?", or "How can I cope with this?". Sometimes conditions like depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and substance use can cause additional problems. If these are issues you would like to manage better, call today for an appointment and let's talk together about finding workable solutions.
I am a licensed professional counselor with over 15 years experience helping people with these and other problems.

I often draw upon my experience with meditation and
Mindfulness
-Based counseling approaches in my work.
Seeking help isn't easy, and it takes a certain amount of courage. Just like being human. One of the things I've learned in 20+ years as a practicing psychologist is that we all have reserves of courage within us-even when we're feeling our worst. Having a compassionate and accepting person to talk to can help us find that courage and acceptance within ourselves. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, upset, or confused, or just think you might benefit from touching base with someone supportive and understanding, I would be happy to meet with you.

All of my work is trauma informed and
mindfulness
is a cornerstone of my approach.
It takes courage to walk in and sit down with someone to share your story. An honest story that includes stress, anxieties, sadness, grief, and emotional suffering. My intention as a therapist is to create a safe and inclusive space for clients. This space allows individuals to open up and be present with the emotions, thoughts, and feelings that make up the human experience. I currently specialize in working with adults struggling with depression, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, and relationship issues.

I use many types of therapy as needed, the most universal being CBT and
mindfulness
.
Our mental health is impacted by our physiology as well as a variety of environmental factors. My approach as a therapist is to get to know you and your unique story very well. In the process, we identify which parts play what role and how best to heal. I work collaboratively with you to optimize functioning, restore inner peace and find happiness. Allow me to help you along on your healing and growth journey.

My approach is grounded in existential and humanistic theories, with a focus on integrating
mindfulness
and compassion into relationships with self and others.
Accepting New Clients! Whatever struggle is motivating you to start counseling, something inside is knocking. The knock may be feeling depressed, anxious, angry, or overwhelmed. It may be feeling disconnected in relationships and from what is meaningful in your life, a sense of emptiness or lack of purpose. It may be unresolved trauma. To answer that knock means to turn inward, which can be challenging and uncomfortable at times, yet I whole-heartedly believe the life you seek is patiently waiting. The pain you are experiencing is actually an invitation for healing and growth. Answer. When things break down, breakthroughs happen.

I do promote
mindfulness
and distraction techniques that can be translated into all facets of life.
I have been personally affected by a high risk pregnancy, a traumatic birth and a NICU stay. That is what has led me to this work. For the past eleven years, my work has been with perinatal mental health; specifically working with women with high risk pregnancies due to a congenital anomaly identified in their baby during pregnancy. I am here to help anyone that is struggling with feelings of angst and unrest about those unexpected challenges that are thrown your way. I have worked a great deal with perinatal and infant loss as well. I have a growing passion for helping women, specifically focusing on maternal mental health.

I take a holistic approach by utilizing meditation and
mindfulness
practices, and collaborating with you to help you meet your goals.
You have an incredibly difficult time saying no to friends, coworkers and family. You feel constant pressure to "get things right" and can immediately go to the worst case scenario when something is off. You have a constant critic in your head that won't stop. You can't remember what you did this morning because your mind goes a mile a minute. It's like you can't catch a break. It doesn't have to be this way; I can help. I love working with busy, exhausted queer and cis, het women and teens to help you give your mind a break; to finally find relief from your inner critic, decrease your worry and stress.

I believe that no matter what age you are, most emotional struggles stem from a feeling of disconnection - from self, family and friends, or the world in general. You may feel as if you aren't yourself lately, or as if relationships have become difficult to navigate. Possibly you're having a hard time staying present and engaging in the world around you. If you are seeking therapy for your child or your teen, it may seem as if their behaviors or reactions don't match up to the situation they are in. Feeling seen, heard, and understood in therapy can allow adults and children to build or repair connections to self and others.

Your life has suddenly been turned upside down. You've been completely walloped by a death, divorce, illness, shattered dream, or the searing reality that life is often just tough, really tough. You're struggling under all this heavy grief and loss. Waves of hard feelings keep coming at you and your best efforts to deal with them aren't helping nearly enough. And since you're normally the one who has it all together, everyone thinks you're doing so much better than you really are. You tell yourself they're all doing their best to support you but – let’s face it – their best kinda sucks, and so you're left feeling isolated and alone.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
