I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who works with adolescents, adults and
couples
. I approach psychotherapy as an opportunity to address unresolved issues and conflicts as they arise in life through the therapeutic
relationship
. I believe it is important to examine the various ways and places in one's life that symptoms present, and to work to understand the function and underlying meanings of the symptoms.

A trusting therapeutic
relationship
is essential.
I believe that no matter what age you are, most emotional struggles stem from a feeling of disconnection - from self, family and friends, or the world in general. You may feel as if you aren't yourself lately, or as if relationships have become difficult to navigate. Possibly you're having a hard time staying present and engaging in the world around you. If you are seeking therapy for your child or your teen, it may seem as if their behaviors or reactions don't match up to the situation they are in. Feeling seen, heard, and understood in therapy can allow adults and children to build or repair connections to self and others.

I understand that beginning therapy is not easy and takes many people out of their comfort zone. I believe in a warm and nurturing environment that allows clients to work at their own pace. Your journey is your own, and I offer a non-judgmental approach with each person I work with. I enjoy meeting with individuals,
couples
, and families. I have specialized training in Internal Family Systems (IFS). This model allows clients the opportunity to get to know each "part" of themselves and provides a way to regulate emotions and improve problem solving skills.

I will guide you (and your
partner
if they are attending) through a customizing action plan based on five core principles: 1) Create a circle of safety 2) Start with the body 3) Look for goodness in the most unlikely places 4) Experience a small dab of what frightens you.
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and seasoned yoga instructor with over 20 years experience. I take a body-centered approach and specialize in
couples
and individuals under stress. I am a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and also the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy. If you are tired of talking about your issues and getting nowhere, then I can help. I go beyond traditional talk therapy methods to get to the heart of the problem, so that you can mend that great divide of heart, body and mind and get the love you deserve.

My practice is open to adult individuals,
couples
, and the GLBT community.
When you seek therapy, it is usually because something doesn't feel right. The reasons for this are not always in your consciousness. The therapy process is a journey during which, through exploration, you can uncover issues that lie beneath the surface. You become a student of the self. I can guide you on this journey. By making connections between past and present and recognizing repeated patterns of behavior, you can begin to see the "big picture," and make decisions that can bring about the changes you hope to achieve.

My counseling practice centers around helping individuals and
couples
who have experienced sexual trauma in any of its various forms. Whether it be due to recent infidelity, a long history of sexual, physical and emotional betrayal, sexual identity confusion, or present day repercussions of childhood abuse and trauma, I consider it a privilege to walk with clients into the darkness of their stories. I enjoy coming alongside and advocating for those who are tired of just coping, dissatisfied with their quality of life, and desperate for deep change and healing.

Any ending, beginning or life change can disrupt your sense of who you are in the world — whether that be a break-up, divorce or separation, the loss of a loved one, a move or career change, a new
relationship
or becoming a parent or empty-nester. These changes can stir up old wounds, past relational traumas and overwhelming emotions that leave you stuck looping in old, dissatisfying behavior patterns. We now know that traditional talk therapy simply is not enough to heal your past wounds and relational traumas to create the boundaries, connection and joyful life of fulfilling relationships you dream of.

I have worked with many
couples
who are trying to come back from infidelity.
I currently see both individuals and
couples
across a broad spectrum of issues: infidelity, intimacy barriers, pornography, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, communication challenges, , spiritual matters, etc. I find that many folks are seeking healthy ways to express themselves, forgive others, and find peace within. Talking with someone who is trained to help in these matters can provide a way forward to more fulfilling relationships and a more satisfying life.

Emotions...UGH! What are they good for? Well...you might not want to hear this, but those emotions you are feeling are serving a purpose, but you might not understand how they are serving you. That's where I come in. You may feel aimless in parenthood, career, or your relationships. You want to understand more about who you are & what makes you tick, and want a safe and warm space to explore those thoughts. Are you a member of the LGBTQIA+, poly, or open community & nervous to begin counseling because of potential judgement? I get it, so I specifically & especially invite LGBTQIA+ partners and
couples
to come work with me.

Using strengths based theory to help set the foundation of treatment, we are able to establish a therapeutic
relationship
based on a mutual respect and interest for bettering the individuals quality of life.
I believe in providing therapeutic services with a foundation in strength based therapy. This is why: 1) It gives individuals the opportunity to focus on strengths that many have, but are often distracted from. 2) It provides the opportunity to hear things that they are doing correctly, instead of being reminded of what they've done wrong. 3) It enables them to start giving credit for things they have been doing right, but may not have realized. 4) It provides the ability to realize areas that they have strength and how they can use these strengths to help themselves.

You've always done everything right. And yet, your world's just been turned upside down on you. Your life no longer looks or feels like how you thought it would, whether due to a death, a health diagnosis,
relationship
dissatisfaction, or shattered dreams. Waves of hard feelings keep coming at you, and your best efforts to deal with them aren't helping nearly enough. But because you're normally the one who has it all together, everyone thinks you're doing so much better than you really are. You tell yourself everyone's doing their best to support you but – let’s face it – their best kinda sucks, and so you're left feeling all alone.

While my passion is helping people find the joy in life, I am also dedicated to improving the counseling profession. As a past President of both the American Counseling Association of Missouri and the Missouri Mental Health Counselors Association, I have worked to help professional counselors and the field of counseling in the state of Missouri. I extend this focus of helping the profession to teaching and supervising individuals who are pursuing professional counseling as a career.

We are wired to repeat deeply learned patterns that, at a certain point, no longer serve us. Whether it’s in your personal relationships, or your
relationship
with yourself, at times you may find yourself feeling stuck in a repetitive loop, with outcomes that feel undesirable or out of your control. Together we can identify and explore these patterns in order to define your goals and work towards meaningful growth. My role is to accompany you through insightful exploration in order to help increase self-awareness and self-compassion and bring about lasting change and healing.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
