I have experience working with depression,
anxiety
, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse and relational issues.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who works with adolescents, adults and couples. I approach psychotherapy as an opportunity to address unresolved issues and conflicts as they arise in life through the therapeutic relationship. I believe it is important to examine the various ways and places in one's life that symptoms present, and to work to understand the function and underlying meanings of the symptoms.

My counseling style has been shaped greatly by being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and at various moments I have felt the burden of
anxiety
, self-doubt, marginalization, and oppression.
Emotions...UGH! What are they good for? Well...you might not want to hear this, but those emotions you are feeling are serving a purpose, but you might not understand how they are serving you. That's where I come in. You may feel aimless in parenthood, career, or your relationships. You want to understand more about who you are & what makes you tick, and want a safe and warm space to explore those thoughts. Are you a member of the LGBTQIA+, poly, or open community & nervous to begin counseling because of potential judgement? I get it, so I specifically & especially invite LGBTQIA+ partners and couples to come work with me.

My practice focuses on
anxiety
, depression, behavioral issues, family conflict, substance use and grief, as well as general mental health issues.
I believe in providing therapeutic services with a foundation in strength based therapy. This is why: 1) It gives individuals the opportunity to focus on strengths that many have, but are often distracted from. 2) It provides the opportunity to hear things that they are doing correctly, instead of being reminded of what they've done wrong. 3) It enables them to start giving credit for things they have been doing right, but may not have realized. 4) It provides the ability to realize areas that they have strength and how they can use these strengths to help themselves.

I address a variety of issues, including, but not limited to depression,
anxiety
, and relationship problems.
When you seek therapy, it is usually because something doesn't feel right. The reasons for this are not always in your consciousness. The therapy process is a journey during which, through exploration, you can uncover issues that lie beneath the surface. You become a student of the self. I can guide you on this journey. By making connections between past and present and recognizing repeated patterns of behavior, you can begin to see the "big picture," and make decisions that can bring about the changes you hope to achieve.

I often work with people to manage issues in their lives that have become difficult and distressing, such as separation/divorce, career/job changes, grief/loss, relocation, becoming a parent, and retirement. Some clients experience symptoms of
anxiety
or depression and we focus on realistic, practical strategies to reduce their intensity and impact. My approach involves closely assessing how these issues impact daily life, how relationships are affected, what support has or hasn't been available and then develop a plan for working toward changes and greater satisfaction in life.

I've come to know that we don't get rid of the discomforts life brings - our sufferings, losses, wishes,
fears
- but as we come to know ourselves and learn new tools, feeling better and functioning better aren't far away.
We all struggle sometimes, but ongoing issues can leave us exhausted, isolated, confused, discouraged... If your days or nights are hard to get through, if you can't seem to settle down or stop overthinking, if life feels scary or you don't know what to do, if you never feel good enough or can't seem to 'get over' or 'stop doing' x, I'd love to talk with you. My experience is broad, but my practice is largely focused on
anxiety
& stress disorders, relational trauma, chronic & terminal illnesses, and healthy coping/decision making during life transitions.

I can help you navigate concerns related to emotional intensity,
anxiety
, perfectionism, self-criticism, underachievement, frustration intolerance, peer relationships, and executive dysfunction.
Do you or your child display high emotional intensity? Passion and drive for learning? Insatiable curiosity, extreme focus and perfectionist tendencies? Deep empathy and awareness of social injustices and hypocrisy? Fear of trying new things and
anxiety
about the unknown? Gifted individuals are characterized by their heightened perceptions of self and the world around them, but are often limited in their ability to process their intense reactions and emotions. I understand and can relate to the varied and complex needs within the gifted population.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
