After retiring as Director of Counseling at Lindenwood University, I moved to Warren County; I live in Troy and now practice videotherapy from my home office. I have been an LPC in Missouri since 1987, and the author of two books. I very much enjoy working with clients; I have a professional, energetic, friendly style. As a systems therapist, I approach clients in an interdependent manner... never in isolation. Even when working with individual clients, I am mindful of how their myriad relationships affect them...and how they affect others. I think of all clients psycho-biologically. IFS and ketamine are new interests.

Do things feel overwhelming right now? If so, good for you for reaching out for help. You are taking action to live better. With over thirty years of practice, I have worked with hundreds of clients, moving from immobilized to energized toward living more satisfied lives. Whether your current challenge is internal, like symptoms of depression or anxiety, or external, such as relationship or job stress, we can work together to make it better. I have a particular interest in working together with folks who are trying to put their past behind them.

The ideal client who desire to be equipped and enabled to handle their issues independently. The client has the ability to solve their life's puzzle. My role is to assist the client to anchor the KEY piece(s) and help to develop their own coping skills . I have been helping people all of my life as a teacher, school counselor, and licensed professional counselor and hypnotherapist . Working with individuals, couples and families are areas in which I excel. Many practicing counselors do not blend traditional counseling practices with hypnotherapy. Using both approaches allows the client's mind to be "totally engaged."

When juggling a career, relationships, and the intricacies of modern life, it’s easy to fall into the trap of fitting into societal norms at the expense of your true self. This can lead to struggles with authenticity, where expressing your genuine thoughts, feelings, and desires becomes a challenge due to the fear of judgment.

Hey there! I use narrative therapy techniques and training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help build a caring environment where anyone can begin to tell their story and feel heard. Every person is unique, so I focus on each individual with care. I want to help them find ways in which they can process through current issues, build on strengths they never knew they had, and accept who they are no matter the situation. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.

Sometimes it may feel like your inner worldview and dreams don’t match the outer world’s experiences and expectations. Sometimes we need help to gather all of our feelings, thoughts, beliefs, histories, and dreams in order to speak them out loud and make sense of them in a safe space. My goal is to help you share your story and your light with the world. When we share our story we heal; when we heal, we give to the greater world and the ripple of change is exponential. My ideal client's goals are to live authentically and freely, unapologetically, powerfully, and to find fulfillment in the day to day.

I help my clients become more confident, content, and true to themselves, while decreasing unhelpful approaches like worry, inaction, bottling emotions, people-pleasing, and avoidance. My clients are professionals, students, academics, and couples who have recognized that, despite their successes, something is wrong: old ways of coping are failing; challenges are harder to manage; deeper connections are missing; painful thoughts keep resurfacing; difficult memories are walled off; their inner experience is marked by turmoil and confusion; low confidence or existential dilemmas lead to stuckness. Does this sound like you?

I am a man of faith and feel our relationship with our God is an important part of the healing process.
In a nut shell, I care about people and have a desire to help others on their quest for healing, wholeness, and reaching their full potential. Life can be hard and sometimes we need a helping hand to navigate the murky waters, and that's okay. Respect for others and empathy in their circumstances is paramount in this profession and I keep that in mind in all situations.

Emotions...UGH! What are they good for? Well...you might not want to hear this, but those emotions you are feeling do serve a purpose, and you might not understand how they are serving you...YET. That's where I come in. You may feel aimless in parenthood, career, or your relationships. You want to understand more about who you are and what makes you tick, AND want a safe and warm space to explore those thoughts. You might be a member of the LGBTQIA+, poly, and/or open community and worried about judgement as you navigate the unique experiences of your life. Or, as an adult you are still navigating complicated parental relationships.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
