I am a philosophical counselor who has been in private practice for over 23 years. I do not diagnose mental illnesses, nor do I prescribe medication. What I can do is help you with a wide range of issues that we all deal with: relationships, jobs, moral dilemmas, personal identity, love, difficult choices, transitions, addictions, self-care, spiritual/metaphysical questions, questions surrounding the exigencies of everyday living. A conversation is a good way to help you develop your own voice, your own inner resolve and sense of self. The 2,500 history of philosophy can provide invaluable insights as you journey through life.

I come to the counseling room as a fellow traveller with a strong desire to create emotional and spiritual safety, regardless of what must be faced. Much of my experience has been focused on helping men find hope and a voice amid brokenness, loneliness, and relational trouble. I meet with individuals wrestling with anxiety, depression, past or present abuse, sexual confusion, sexual addiction, and spiritual and emotional health in general. Real relief and real growth are really possible!

I have expertise with helping both, men and women as well as families and couples.
I believe in providing therapeutic services with a foundation in strength based therapy. This is why: 1) It gives individuals the opportunity to focus on strengths that many have, but are often distracted from. 2) It provides the opportunity to hear things that they are doing correctly, instead of being reminded of what they've done wrong. 3) It enables them to start giving credit for things they have been doing right, but may not have realized. 4) It provides the ability to realize areas that they have strength and how they can use these strengths to help themselves.

In addition to traditional behavioral techniques, I specialize in a strengths-based approach to counseling. I work with clients of all genders and sexual orientations, with a special interest in LGBTQ+ concerns and addictions. As an individual in recovery and being someone who identifies as a gay male , I am passionate about both populations. As well as working with the trials and tribulations of the addiction itself, I work with the Client to teach how to identify, and address, the underlying stressors to their addiction. I believe in the strength of personal empowerment as I partner with you to achieve your fullest potential.

As a proud bisexual, trans man , I love to work with my LGBT communities. I celebrate kinky and poly people. I strive to be an imperfect ally to non-binary trans people and people of color. Practical, economical, social, psychological and emotional aspects that effect both men and women, also effect their marriage.
Today, the concept of marriage involves practical, economical, social, psychological, and emotional aspects. As the expectation of what a marriage is and should be has increased, the disappointment, disagreement, and struggle to meet all the expectations have also increased.

People often ask ‘How can I benefit from therapy?’ Research has found substantial benefits that go beyond merely surviving in crisis to completely enriching your life. Dr. Levant, a cofounder for the Society of Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, found that ‘ men are starting to realize that talking about their feelings can help them live happier, healthier lives.’ Our mental health impacts our energy levels, productivity, adapting to life changes, how we relate to those around us, and how our physical appearance is perceived. Perhaps most importantly, our mental health can significantly impact our overall health.

I am an experienced therapist having worked for 35 years with persons of all ages who have suffered complex loss and trauma including child abuse and neglect, divorce, domestic violence, family dysfunction, death, illness, unemployment, poverty, crime, and natural and man -made disasters of all kinds.
The vast majority people who seek therapy have suffered losses and traumas which have had very painful consequences for their lives. The best way to heal from those losses is to first have them accurately identified and then to be gradually helped to express one's thoughts and feelings about them to a supportive and compassionate listener. With such support one's experiences are validated as real and one begins to recognize one's strength and courage under the most challenging of circumstances. The opportunity to speak the truth about the painful facts of one's life to a supportive therapist is what heals.

I take pride knowing that people have found having a male therapist to be a beneficial and often reparative experience.
Trauma and sex therapy are my primary areas of practice which allows me to work with people on a variety of issues. Typically, I work with people wanting to build their self-esteem, improve their relationships and communication skills, or understand their sexual interests or identities. My main area of expertise is in working with survivors of sexual and relationship violence as they process their trauma and how those experiences might be impacting their current relationships or sense of self. Ultimately, my goal is to help people discover clarity within the chaos.

In my ten years as a counselor, it's been my privilege to care for men , teens, and couples wrestling with depression, stress, and anxiety; addiction (drugs and alcohol; gambling; sexual...); the grief involved with divorce; the struggles associated with life's transitions; difficulties in school and relationships; and family conflict. My hope is that the men and women I talk to would be able to experience intimacy in their relationships, fullness of life, and find success in their daily lives.

I am a man of faith and feel our relationship with our God is an important part of the healing process.
In a nut shell, I care about people and have a desire to help others on their quest for healing, wholeness, and reaching their full potential. Life can be hard and sometimes we need a helping hand to navigate the murky waters, and that's okay. Respect for others and empathy in their circumstances is paramount in this profession and I keep that in mind in all situations.

And yet, developing a relationship with a trusted male therapist was personally transformative for me—so much so that it led me to pursue therapy as a career.
We can be really hard on ourselves. There's a tendency for that voice in our head to focus only on negative aspects of life, and ignore the positive ones. Over time, this can become a habit, and we no longer even know we are doing it. This fixation on the negative can come from many places: work, family, relationships, friends, stress, anxiety, our past, the news, the list goes on… I am deeply familiar with this voice. Even though I struggled with it for many years, I delayed going to therapy; it felt like too much to add to my busy schedule, my issues didn't feel "worthy" of therapy, and I was resistant to the stigma of therapy.

I also love to help find personal identity with emotionally gifted men and young adults.
If you are anything like me, you have had a moment in your life when you asked yourself "How can I make the pain stop?" For me, therapy is one option for hurting individuals who want to work through pain to find answers to life's experiences & questions. I have had the privilege & challenge to walk alongside individuals, couples and families working to initiate the road to recovery that is so often littered with significant loss & conflict. If you are thinking of starting therapy and are feeling really anxious or hopeless, you are not alone!

I am particularly experienced in working with men who have trouble identifying their own feelings.
You are troubled by some aspects of your significant relationships and are motivated to improve them even if it means having to change yourself and what you are doing in those relationships. You know that sometimes your reactions to events around you are too little or too big for what the situation calls for. You want to know your own feelings better, but more than that, you want to make choices that will get you what you need without them being at the expense of others.

What type of Salem mental health professional is right for me?
While most types of therapy have a lot in common, they also fall into clusters that share core features, such as cognitive therapies or psychodynamic approaches. It is important to seek someone who practices evidence-based therapy, meaning one or more forms of treatment that have been scientifically evaluated and tested, and demonstrate consistent improvement for a majority of patients.

If you are unsure about choosing the right therapist or psychologist, it might be useful to first learn more about therapy types and modalities.

How to find a therapist or counselor in Salem?
When looking to find a therapist, start by considering training and credentials. Studies also indicate that the therapeutic alliance, or the relationship the client develops with the therapist, is an important factor in their ability to work together to achieve the client’s goals.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Finding a psychologist or therapist who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

How to use my insurance?
Understanding cost and insurance coverage is an important concern for many people. With some basic research and conversations with prospective therapists, you should be able to have a good understanding of the best way to afford therapy.
