Ellen Dorfman believes that the client is the ultimate expert. She prefers to accompany clients on the journey of their choosing, assuming the role of guide rather than tour director. Ellen is most interested in what can be learned from the clients as they bring issues of trauma, and loss. Those with grief, loss, depression, and personal growth and identity issues make up much of her practice. When appropriate, Ellen draws upon many years of experience and is equipped and comfortable with a variety of therapeutic tools and skills to help clients in their quests.

I work closely with sexual and gender minority individuals (LGBTQIA+), BIPOC and immigrant/refugee populations. I specialize in working with individuals who are 18+ and who may need help with processing trauma, stabilizing emotional regulation and working towards adaptive core beliefs. I believe that oppressive structures impact a person's emotional wellbeing on a multitude of levels and that intersectional identities of a person are all important in the processing of the mental and physical wellbeing of an individual. I have provided therapeutic services for clients for nearly 15 years.

Anxiety and past trauma have kept you playing small, but in your heart you know that life can be so much bigger! You’re ready to wrestle with anxiety, shine a light on hurts and hardships of the past, and begin living life on your own terms. It feels like you’ve been waiting forever, unsure if the timing is right, but now you realize that “ready” might never happen, and you’re willing to try anyway. You're dreaming of a life where you stop second guessing yourself, where you feel connected and have a deep sense of belonging, and where you're no longer paralyzed by worries. You're ready to get back in the driver's seat of life!

You’ve had enough! The stress has been building. You’ve been holding it in but the littlest thing pushed you over the edge. No one truly understands everything you’ve been through but you aren’t sure you want to let them in. Life has been cruel at times! You try to push it away. It's impossible. Triggers seem to be everywhere. The anxiety and despair in those moments is more than you can handle! Your world becomes small in hopes that you can avoid these feelings but it only makes things worse. You are stuck in a vicious cycle. Nothing seems to help. You don’t want to keep living this way but you don’t know what to do or where to go.

*Yes, I am gay :)* I believe that therapy is for everyone, because everyone deserves this sacred space to look into the mirror and see themselves. Sometimes the reflection isn’t pretty. Sometimes there are things we wish we didn’t see. However, witnessing and recognizing the pain and sadness is the first part of moving through it. That’s where the therapist comes in, to stand by patiently and point out the behaviors, beliefs, thoughts, and feelings that are causing us pain. They are the person who helps us shed everything that is holding us back so that we can finally become the person we always knew we could be.

I am a licensed clinical social worker who practices both individual and couples therapy. I have extensive experience working with client's from diverse backgrounds. My training as a social worker has given me the understanding of how both childhood and current life circumstances impact people. I work to assist client's in understanding how they deal with these problems. My goal is never to provide answers for people, but to help people to understand themselves so that they can function and operate independently of their conflicts and problems.

How can I find a therapist in Saint Louis?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
