I truly embrace working with clients from a multicultural and diverse background.
Are you going through a major change in your life? Divorce, remarriage, blending a family, new job, new baby? Have you hit a road block in your career? Is anxiety keeping you from living an enriching lifestyle? Do you have unresolved trauma? Do you have a difficult to manage child? I can help you with these sudden roadblocks. During these transitional phases of life, we need a support system to help us gain strength, resilience and maintain a healthy living. I use EMDR, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in working with adult clients and play therapy with my child clients. I act as an advocate, sounding board and gentle challenger.

I have a multicultural background and experience, and can help you in English, French, Spanish and Dutch; face to face or via the internet.
Gnôthi seautón. "Know thyself" (Aphorism inscribed over the entrance to the temple of Apollo at Delphi). The ancient philosophers already knew the importance of self-knowledge.. I can help you use mindfulness and compassion, to embark into the adventure of exploring the obvious and less obvious parts of you, that affect you personally and in your relationships. Heal pains and unload unnecessary burdens, present and past. Expand your motivation, and go forward toward realizing your full potential and increasing your happiness!

My training and experiences have included not just clinical skills but also multicultural counseling, Black Psychology, and Diversity.
Are your concerns with life, finances, relationships, love, loss and/or health generating strong feelings of emotional distress? I use a strength-based approach to help find solutions rather than problems. My name is Dr. Deadre Holmes and I am a licensed psychologist in the states of Missouri and Illinois, who has worked with children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens and couples for over 10 years. I earned my Ph. D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia, I have experience in a number of settings such as university counseling center, community counseling, military medical center, prison, and nursing homes.

I work with adults and couples on issues related to self-esteem, relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, grief, body image and eating disorders, identity development (including multicultural and LGBTQIA), spirituality, and trauma.
If you've found yourself here, then I imagine you are looking for support to make a change in your life. It can be so challenging when you are shifting through all of these profiles to understand who can help you and how. It is true, there is not one counselor that is a great fit for each person. However, with over 12 years of therapist experience, I have seen that therapy REALLY works! I have also noticed that underneath a lot of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and relationship concerns is trauma. I specialize in working with trauma using EMDR. I help people move from a life of pain to one where they experience thriving.

In my practice, I draw primarily from existential/humanistic models, Jungian depth psychology, attachment theory, & multicultural models of therapy.
Therapy can be an invitation to explore our inner world and how it relates to the development of the self, relationships, and our way of making meaning in this world. My aim as a psychologist is to offer that unique space to clients where transformation, challenge and deeper understanding can occur. I specialize in work with LGBTQ+ youth and adults, in grief and loss, end of life concerns, identity development, trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and psychosocial oncology. I work with adults, children, and adolescents for psychotherapy and provide assessments for autism, learning disabilities and social/emotional concerns.

Empathy, authenticity, and unconditional acceptance are the fundamental qualities I cultivate in my relationships with my clients. I try to create a safe place where you can be vulnerable and feel validated while also gaining room for self-compassion, hope, and healing. My approach to therapy is holistic, though I am drawn to attachment and person-centered theories within a multicultural framework; everyone's story is different and well-lived. I strongly believe in the possibility of change, despite what we have lived or what we are currently living through.

I practice from a culturally-responsive and inclusive foundation, and have extensive experience working with patients from various cultural, racial/ethnic, spiritual and religious backgrounds. In particular, I feel passionate about serving the Asians, and immigrant population. As an Asian immigrant myself, I understand our unique cultural challenges such as identity issues and intergenerational conflicts, and how cultural trauma and stressors can play a role in our mental health. I also enjoy working with couples who are in mixed race/ multicultural relationship, or encountering challenges due to factors related to race and culture.

I am fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French, and I have worked in different countries with multicultural families for the last 25 years.
Sometimes, even when we know that something is wrong, we still need guidance in order to disentangle the problems that cause us suffering. Every problem has a solution and every difficult period can have a peaceful resolution. My therapeutic approach primarily stems from Family Systems Theory. I focus on emotional independence through individuation and help individuals, couples and families gain additional growth, strengths, and insights into their lives. I work on reducing negative communication patterns and installing love as an attachment bond.

Have you found yourself struggling with life stressors such as fertility problems, chronic illness, marital discord, relationship infidelity, or even difficulty making major decisions? If so, therapy is right for you. Are you blissfully happy and seeking pre-marital counseling with a future spouse? If so, therapy is right for you too! These incentives for counseling have one common thread, a desire to pinpoint areas where you are "stuck", guard against potential threats to your relationship harmony, improve your life, improve your relationship, and become the best version of yourself.

Waitlisting clients as of April 2023. - If you are like me, you have procrastinated this decision to seek counseling for some time, and you are steadily nearing desperation. Entering into therapy is difficult - it is important to find a therapist with whom you connect. I provide a free phone consultation and a half price first session, so we can decide if we are a good fit. I work best with clients who are motivated to begin the explorative process towards healing. I seek to honor the vulnerability required to make changes in one's life by listening without judgment and growing to understand the individual's experiences.

Each day brings new challenges. Some involve our families or our jobs or our relationships, but all involve our minds. Healing begins with the recognition that these battles are not obstacles, but doorways, to a better life — opportunities to develop ourselves in ways we couldn’t previously imagine. You possess the capacity for greatness. You have a purpose! Awareness and the vulnerability to trust another human are keys to unlocking your potential in these ways. Therapy provides an outlet to experience yourself as such, and to work toward the harmony and inner peace you’ve longed for.

You're here because you're ready for something to be different - your relationships to be better, your work to be more enjoyable, your life to feel more meaningful. You're in the right place! I work well with people who feel stuck or that things aren't as they "should" be. My clients want clarity about their experiences, their relationships, and the direction of their lives. Sometimes this means diving into what happened in the past, but it can also mean focusing on what's happening now (for better or worse) so that you can move towards a future you want.

Our clients often identify as LGBTQIA+ / Queer, Non-monogamous, sex positive or sex neutral, neurodivergence, and or disabled and living within Missouri. Clients often start therapy to work on goals to learn more about identities, setting boundaries with others in their lives, opening up their relationship, learning more about themselves or others gender or sexual expression. Through individual, relationship, or family counseling we work to increase healthy communication based on our values, instead of assumed social norms.

Multicultural Therapists

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counseling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritize the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognize how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
