After 28 years of counseling individuals, couples and families, and growing the love in a 30+ year marriage myself, I feel privileged to say I specialize in "Relationships." I love inspiring people to look more within themselves for happiness, security, and value; and to understand that friction in relationships can help us grow, and grow closer. Those open to change benefit most; a healthy couple takes healthy people. I also see adults individually, many with relationship challenges, but also seeking help with concerns like low self worth, anxiety, sadness, depression, negative thoughts, addictions, feeling stuck/unfulfilled.

Have you found yourself struggling with life stressors such as fertility problems, chronic illness, marital discord, relationship infidelity, or even difficulty making major decisions? If so, therapy is right for you. Are you blissfully happy and seeking pre- marital counseling with a future spouse? If so, therapy is right for you too! These incentives for counseling have one common thread, a desire to pinpoint areas where you are "stuck", guard against potential threats to your relationship harmony, improve your life, improve your relationship, and become the best version of yourself.

Marriage can be a deep place of companionship and safety; or a lonely wasteland (and everything in between).
NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: Email to be added to the waitlist. As a father of three children, and a husband of over 20 years, I understand many of the challenges that family life presents. I have seen successful professional men and women feel defeated by the struggles they face at home. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals and couples as they change painful patterns and find joy they previously thought impossible. It sometimes is a long, difficult journey; but it does not have to be traveled alone.

There is hope whether the problem is trust, emotional distance, or escalating conflict. I start with a strengths based focus using research based Gottman method interventions that work. Do you have more than 20 days in the month of sadness, irritability or anxious worry? Individual counseling is a place to tell your story in order to build new skills and experiences to increase the days of happiness and contentment each month.

Some areas of focus in my practice include family-of-origin trauma, spirituality, and issues related to marriage , relationships and sexuality.
To share your story and start a journey toward healing is profoundly brave and admirable. Being entrusted to walk alongside those who are willing to take that risk is a privilege that I don’t take lightly. I count it as a tremendous honor to be invited to sit with the clients I work with, in moments of vulnerability and hurt and in those of victory and celebration.

It’s not easy to maintain a relationship and grow as individuals at the same time. Sometimes relationships can get stuck when you’re arguing about the same thing, and it can feel like you just can’t seem to get on the same page. Or, maybe your relationship is changing in a big way—parenthood, marriage , someone’s career—and you want to work through that decision or create a plan. Whatever stage you are in, counseling can be a great place to update the relationship and come together in an intentional way. I would be honored to work with you and help you to rebuild your connection, restore joy, and grow stronger as a couple.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
