As a trained EMDR therapist, I have utilized the protocol clinically with traumatic grief , coaching professional athletes and executives, and preparing candidates for advanced licensing exams by unblocking the emotional trauma freeze response often leading to performance paralysis.
Are you standing in the face of uncertainty in your life or career and confused as to how to move forward? Does performance paralysis settle in when considering a risk? Having lived through Hurricane Katrina, resulting in an abrupt relocation to St. Louis in 2008 (after forty years in Louisiana), I can relate to life being out of balance, starting over, and the need for grounding. After fourteen years in St. Louis, I've recently chosen to relocate to Houston to be near family and have expanded my virtual practice to several states. Life is about transition, investing in a balanced life, so that we can draw from each area as needed.

My background in social work, grief , and caregiving taught me that we are unconscious caregivers for ourselves – regardless of our relation to others near to us.
Hey! I’m Levi. I invite you to take a moment in your search to exhale with me. I appreciate you finding your way to me today. What’s more, I appreciate the world you exist in right now. No matter your stage of life, or which part(s) of your internal and external worlds you want to discuss – I will arrive in gentle kindness to strategize with you toward digestible approaches to life problems. You need not have “one big issue” that brings you to our space. In the words of my favorite band, Yo La Tengo: “Let’s be undecided, let’s take our time; and sooner or later, we will know our mind.”

I believe counseling is most powerful when it sensitizes you to what’s happening in your mind, heart, and body and helps you meet whatever you find with compassion. Feeling your feels (literally) is the first step to making sense of them. Within that confusion is the possibility of deeper self-knowledge and freedom. I find it helpful to use yoga and mindfulness practices to keep you grounded as you explore big emotions, and I enjoy working with people who want to bring the wisdom of the body into their therapeutic work—whether that’s processing loss , trauma, change, overwhelm, spiritual concerns, or feeling stuck and disconnected.

Perhaps you haven’t been able to identify why you feel so empty, lack purpose, or just can’t seem to keep your head above water—you may feel like you’re drowning. Maybe you feel extremely anxious about many things, a loved one passed unexpectedly, or you haven’t had an opportunity to talk about things that have been buried deep inside. The good news is that Jesus is acquainted with every grief and burden and knows exactly what you’re thinking and feeling. He came so that you would have abundant life and go from Glory to Glory. Are you ready for it?

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
