I have a passion for working with couples who are hoping to grow their family .
It’s not easy to maintain a relationship and grow as individuals at the same time. Sometimes relationships can get stuck when you’re arguing about the same thing, and it can feel like you just can’t seem to get on the same page. Or, maybe your relationship is changing in a big way—parenthood, marriage, someone’s career—and you want to work through that decision or create a plan. Whatever stage you are in, counseling can be a great place to update the relationship and come together in an intentional way. I would be honored to work with you and help you to rebuild your connection, restore joy, and grow stronger as a couple.

I primarily use EMDR, Family Systems Theory, Feminist Theory, and Attachment Theory to help my clients.
I work with those who struggle with trauma, relationship problems, and not taking care of oneself first. I have experience working with those who have sexual abuse or assault histories, trauma within problematic relationships, and compassion fatigue. Trauma comes in all sizes and from a variety of experiences, so do not discount what you have lived through. If you are unsure if what you have experienced is trauma, we can make that determination together. No matter the circumstances that bring you into therapy, we will spend time healing your wounds to help you grow into the person you wish to be, with a stronger sense of safety.

I work with couples, individuals, and families focusing on issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief/loss, and trauma. I have been trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and utilize these techniques for couples and individuals. During our sessions, we will identify the underlying emotional needs and gain tools to communicate those needs to others, whether that is with our partner, our family , or our friends. My goal is to provide a non-judgmental space where people can increase their understanding of the unhelpful patterns of behaviors that might be causing them pain and hardship.

Van Der Kolk’s methodologies, internal family systems (working with parts of a person), and cognitive processing therapy.
I have been practicing psychology for 6 years and I have a PsyD from Regent University with a specialty in Clinical Psychology and Religious/Spiritual issues. I believe that every client brings strengths and resources to the table from which to draw upon, and every client has an internal motivation to change and grow to some degree. I come from a community mental health background and connect with the value of accessible, affordable healthcare for those who need it. I operate from a cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, mindfulness, and trauma informed perspective, depending on the client’s need.

I enjoy working with young and older adults in areas related to anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, relationships, identity (including LGBTQ+), self-esteem, and family dynamics.
Each day brings new challenges. Some involve our families or our jobs or our relationships, but all involve our minds. Healing begins with the recognition that these battles are not obstacles, but doorways, to a better life — opportunities to develop ourselves in ways we couldn’t previously imagine. You possess the capacity for greatness. You have a purpose! Awareness and the vulnerability to trust another human are keys to unlocking your potential in these ways. Therapy provides an outlet to experience yourself as such, and to work toward the harmony and inner peace you’ve longed for.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
