partner
with my clients so that they may achieve their goals. I have a diverse background in treating trauma, addiction and mental health from a strengths-based perspective, and I have been successful in helping clients to integrate long-term solutions in their daily lives. I feel that my ability to create a strong therapeutic alliance with clients as one of my biggest strengths. I provide therapeutic services to adults, adolescents,
couples
, and families, specializing in work with clients who are seeking growth or healing within relationships – both those held with others and with themselves. Much of my work explores experiences of alienation or conflict within ourselves, our families, and our communities. The clients that I have found to best fit my approach are seeking purpose and meaning, navigating feelings of uncertainty, and are interested in examining ways outward relationships reflect their inner selves.

I work with individuals,
couples
and families.
I have enjoyed working as a
partner
in mental health and wellness for over 20 years. It is my hope that as I walk alongside the client he or she will recognize strengths, develop skills, and embrace healing. While I have specialized training in some complex issues, much of the work of a counselor is helping people deal with the everyday struggles most of us face on a daily basis.

We will work together to build a trusting
relationship
from which you feel safe to explore the past, present and future.
Have you experienced trauma in your life and seem to struggle with the same situations over and over, not knowing how to stop the vicious cycle. Are your emotions problematic, do you repeat unhealthy behaviors, relationships, have an onslaught of negative thoughts and no matter how successful you have become, you feel like a fake, insecure and if people really knew? How many times have you promised that you will stop, alcohol, drugs and really mean it, want it, yet once again fall short. As a veteran, were you in combat, was your military experience depleting, anxiety provoking and your life never the same? What keeps you stuck?

I do not offer

I am a particularly good fit for clients who tend to intellectualize their problems and who are uncomfortable/unaccustomed to tapping into their emotions. I am a more interactive therapist. I see therapy as a conversation. If you are someone who has been frustrated by therapists who are detached, I may be a good fit for you. I am patient and I will not push you into going deeper than you feel comfortable with at the moment. I know that change and trust are slow processes and I will respect your ability to set the pace of your own therapy.

After 28 years of counseling individuals,
couples
and families, and growing the love in a 30+ year marriage myself, I feel privileged to say I specialize in "Relationships." I love inspiring people to look more within themselves for happiness, security, and value; and to understand that friction in relationships can help us grow, and grow closer. Those open to change benefit most; a healthy couple takes healthy people. I also see adults individually, many with
relationship
challenges, but also seeking help with concerns like low self worth, anxiety, sadness, depression, negative thoughts, addictions, feeling stuck/unfulfilled.

I am also trained in Gottman Method
Couples
therapy and EMDR.
Sometimes we struggle in knowing how to tolerate and accept difficult feelings without shame and judgment. Often times this is due to adverse experiences in childhood and/or adulthood. I am passionate about helping clients find their creative abilities and potential and incorporating it into the healing process. I practice from a depth psychotherapy perspective that is typically longer term and unstructured, but highly rewarding. Areas of interest include attachment, relational concerns, Jungian influenced depth psychotherapy, the personal and collective unconscious, dream work, and somatic work.

NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: Email to be added to the waitlist. As a father of three children, and a husband of over 20 years, I understand many of the challenges that family life presents. I have seen successful professional men and women feel defeated by the struggles they face at home. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals and
couples
as they change painful patterns and find joy they previously thought impossible. It sometimes is a long, difficult journey; but it does not have to be traveled alone.

Many of us enter therapy believing that we are lost causes or somehow don’t belong in this space. Let me be the first to affirm: you are whole, you do not need to be ‘fixed’, you belong. In therapy, the needs of each person are unique, but our shared humanity connects us in deep and meaningful ways, so our time together will bring both of these to the fore. We will need your self-determination and tenacity, and we will also need one another — the
relationship
between client and therapist is in fact the vehicle for healing and recovery. My deepest wish is to be a guide and fellow sojourner as we journey toward change.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
