We seem to struggle to create room for self-compassion and
acceptance
in our lives, usually because they’ve been crowded out by our self-criticism or perfectionism. We have come by most of this honestly through the ways we were affected by early experiences in childhood or adolescence. When together we find a way to be with your experiences, including the difficult emotions that may arise when exploring them, we find our way to meaning and purpose. We find our way to the recognition of our shared humanity. We find our way to a more authentic and wholehearted life.

I use
Acceptance
and Commitment Therapy and Brainspotting to help people open up, be present, and take meaningful action in their lives.
You're here because you're ready for something to be different - your relationships to be better, your work to be more enjoyable, your life to feel more meaningful. You're in the right place! I work well with people who feel stuck or that things aren't as they "should" be. My clients want clarity about their experiences, their relationships, and the direction of their lives. Sometimes this means diving into what happened in the past, but it can also mean focusing on what's happening now (for better or worse) so that you can move towards a future you want.

Some people have intense or overwhelming emotions, feeling stressed or just “stuck” in life. While we all try to do the best we can to problem solve and manage life stressors, sometimes what we’ve been doing is no longer working for us. I am skilled in helping clients untangle strong emotions and thoughts by balancing the “see-saw” of
acceptance
of what won't change in life while also empowering clients to use new skills to change. In doing so, we identify unhelpful behaviors that are no longer serving a purpose and work toward more healthy behaviors that are relevant to people’s goals to figure out the problems in their lives.

It takes guts to ask for help. Going to therapy is not admitting defeat or a sign that you are weak. It is an
act
of self-kindness & sign that you are ready to make meaningful changes happen for yourself. Change can be scary but if you are ready, you don’t have to do it alone. My mission as a therapist is to support you throughout the process of self-discovery and help you to build enough confidence to chase after and reach your goals. Together we can examine how fear, societal expectations and a need for others' approval may be limiting your ability to lead a life that allows you to flourish and reach your full potential.

I have extensive experience and training in providing anxiety disorder treatment and specialize in treating OCD. My treatment approach combines elements of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and
Acceptance

OCD can present in many different ways, and unfortunately many people suffer for years without receiving appropriate diagnosis and treatment. If you are ready to take action on gaining back control of your life from anxiety, I can help.

I work from a person-centered, strengths-based perspective and incorporate interventions from DBT and
ACT
into sessions.
Throughout my life, I have dealt with my fair share of mental health struggles. Beginning in middle school and into my 20s, I was often depressed and anxious. Because of this, I sought therapy several times, sometimes with success and sometimes not. So, I know how incredibly hard it can be to start the process of seeking therapy. I am SO incredibly proud of you for beginning this journey! Due to my less-than-ideal experience in adolescence, after high school I pursued a degree in education and taught middle school for several years in hopes of making a difference in my students’ lives.

I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
Acceptance
and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness practices into our sessions, which helps to improve coping skills and better manage stress and pain.
Making the choice to start therapy can feel daunting, but it can be a rewarding and healing experience. Therapy is a space where you can express thoughts and feelings without judgment. You can explore and heal, learn and observe, and work towards the goals and values that you identify as important. I assist people in discovering peace and comfort within their lives through coping skills, mindfulness practices, and self compassion, as well as exploring and healing from past experiences and traumas.

Every new day presents the opportunity to begin a new chapter. What is already written on our pages may shape us, but it does not define us. Every obstacle, experience, and transition we encounter brings opportunity for joy, growth, meaning, and connection. Therapy provides support to reflect on where you have been, where you are now, and where you want to be. New Chapter offers therapy services that fit your life and comfort level.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
