Dr. Michael Gottfried enjoys working with adults, adolescents and couples on a wide range of issues. His work with clients centers on improving their view of themselves and improving their relationships with others in order to resolve issues of depression, anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem. Particular areas of specialization include working with men and with young adults.

I offer counseling to couples, families, adults, and teens dealing with a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, addiction, marital conflict, relationship difficulties, and more. My therapeutic style is characterized by genuine warmth and connection and evidence-based clinical treatment. My clients are supported in accessing their innate abilities and strengths while learning practical and realistic coping skills they can use in their daily lives. Using compassion-focused therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution-focused models, I help adolescents and adults practice ways to move away from self-defeating behaviors into more peace.

As a relationship, sex, and gender therapist, I help couples, relationships, and individuals explore identities, navigate non-monogamy, and experience greater pleasure and intimacy. I am passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ folks in exploring and healing from the negative impacts of internalized homophobia, transphobia, and racism as they often manifest in shame, guilt, and low self-esteem.

I have an extensive knowledge of the rehabilitation process of individuals with various physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and psychological impairments. I have experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety, mood disorders, personality disorders, trauma, addiction, PTSD, substance abuse/chemical dependency, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, and gender dysphoria.
