I use dialectical behavior therapy, which helps folks regain control over their lives by regulating intense emotions and urges that have been running the show up until now.
I excel in working with adults who are ready to become cycle breakers, a.k.a. folks who root out unhealthy patterns within themselves that were originally passed on by others in their environment. My clients tend to be "supersensors" in that they have a predisposition for deeply feeling emotions, and also tend to have lived through some form of trauma, like adverse childhood experiences and systemic oppression. Sessions with me help kick your inner critic in favor of self-validation, process the big emotions that come up while doing this work, and discover who you are underneath the expectations that others imposed on you.

I am trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, relational-cultural therapy, and motivational interviewing.
Examining and shifting age-old patterns can be an overwhelming endeavor to take on alone. My role is to offer you a compassionate, authentic, and non-judgmental space as you embark on that journey. I support folks to cultivate joy, ease, and meaning in their lives, even when doing so feels impossible. This might include strengthening executive functioning skills, exploring gender or sexual identity, or learning self-validation in an often invalidating world. Together, we'll identify effective ways to move through life's most difficult moments - the past can't be changed, but we can transform how it influences our present and future.

My practice is informed by trauma-informed and cognitive-behavioral principles, and draws from my training in CBT, DBT , RO- DBT , ACT, and other behavioral therapies.
Hi there! I’m Karen, and I’m a licensed clinical social worker who helps people learn to live more meaningful lives. I work with adults and young adults who want to find joy, purpose, and ease in their lives, but struggle to make this a reality. Instead, they find themselves feeling trapped by painful thoughts, emotions, habits, past experiences, or current circumstances—including political and cultural factors that impact mental health.

We can get there by learning and then practicing new coping techniques that can improve your quality of life while working to understand the patterns that may have led you to seek support. I treat OCD utilizing ERP (Exposure Response Prevention), and I am trained in DBT and EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy).
Oftentimes a therapist needs a therapist, and I specialize in working with therapists. I am intimately familiar with the burnout and fatigue that accompanies a therapists’ job. Every therapist I have worked with is a deeply compassionate, selfless, and idealistic person, who is dedicated to their clients. I work to help therapists care for themselves so that they can continue to feel healthy as they work with their clients. While we can often successfully support our clients, this does not always extend to feeling supported in our own lives.

Applying the techniques I have been trained in such as mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT ), trauma focused cognitive therapy, divorce, and the internal family systems model (IFS), grief and healing, clients will begin the process of reconciling the past and experiencing an improved quality of life in the present.
Helping clients, whether we meet individually, as couples or in groups, is my highest priority. As a compassionate active listener, I provide a safe, warm, non-judgmental space. Our close relationships within our lives can give us strength but can also create conflict, anxiety, and/or depression. The result may be physical discomfort, low self-esteem, even PTSD, as well as thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can get in the way of making positive decisions. Working as a team, my clients and I identify behavioral patterns, set goals, and begin a plan to achieve resolution and healing.

Because therapy is an investment, it's important to find the right therapist. I treat therapy as a safe place where every single part of the client is welcome, even the parts uncomfortable to share. In my practice there is no hierarchy of pain and suffering. We all deserve to be supported while working to make positive changes, both big and small. Successful therapy includes an attitude of nonjudgment, a space that is comfortable, yet challenges clients to grow, and sessions that feel collaborative and supportive. I use a variety evidence-based therapy tailored to each person's needs and personality. We work together on your goals.

As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional II, I have received training in modalities including EMDR, CBT and DBT .
Therapy is a tool that has the potential to help you better manage a range of issues. Maybe you find yourself feeling so sad or anxious that it's taking the fun out of your life. Maybe your best just never feels good enough. Or you’re feeling depressed, lonely or angry and using a substance to cope. Maybe you've experienced trauma or abuse and you're struggling to move beyond the anger and pain. Or maybe you just feel like you need to talk to someone. If any of these describes you, let’s talk. I understand that seeking a consultation can feel overwhelming but while therapy can be hard work, it can also be very rewarding!

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
