My style of therapy aims to move clients from a perspective of, “what is wrong with me?” to “what is my
pain
trying to tell me?” I help clients to decode the messiness and confusion of emotions, learn to understand the interplay between the body and the mind, and access the innate strengths and abilities you already have to heal.
“Logically, I know I shouldn't be reacting this way, but emotionally....that's a different story”. As a therapist, I can't tell you how many times I have heard some version of this from clients. Have you been struggling in a losing battle to fight off intense emotions like fear, sadness, shame, or anger even though you “know” better? Have you even had physical symptoms in your body like heart racing, muscle tightness, headaches, or stomach upset, even on days where everything appears to be “fine”?

Hi. Thank you for taking a look at my counseling profile. I love counseling and have been practicing for 30 years. One of the things I've noticed new clients are concerned about is being able to express themselves without being judged, as well as if the experience will be awkward. In all my years of practicing, I've heard almost everything imaginable and judgment is not a part of how I work. Everything in my office is 100% confidential and safe. I know how to ask the right question and keep the conversation flowing.

1. Talk about your concerns and what you hope to achieve in therapy
2. Give you insight into how the therapy process works
3. Help you decide whether you feel comfortable working with me

My philosophy of counseling is to let others know they are not alone. Clients will always have someone to talk to about anything troublesome. I believe all people need someone to be there for them, to comfort them and give them tools to self-sooth and learn to succeed to the best of their ability. Through unconditional positive regard, creating a safe space which is nonjudgmental and confidential, and by using active listening and other techniques clients can continue to learn to improve themselves and their environment.

Whether you are in a marriage that is struggling, having a problem personally with substances, or just need some help clearing out the clutter in your life, my approach to counseling comes from many different counseling theories. I believe that it is important to focus on the here and now, emphasizing future actions, behaviors, and thoughts, rather than deeply exploring the past. While the past has brought us where we are today, how you believe today and how you act today is of more importance. I believe in being directive and intentional in all aspects of therapy.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
