I know that asking for help can be a difficult process especially when it comes to the mental health of your
child
. We have all had times in our lives when we and/or our kids needed extra support to be healthier. I am a Private Practice Therapist and a Registered Play Therapist (aka: I have a lot of training and experience counseling kids). I enjoy helping kids who struggle with attachment issues and/or have experienced trauma which is why I am trained in the two evidenced based trauma therapy treatments (TFCBT and EMDR) and in Theraplay Level 1 to grow relational attachment. Many of my clients are foster care or adopted kids.

Being a mom is agonizing when your
child
’s struggling. You’ve done your best and don’t know what else to do. Love mixes with pain and it feels like your heart is breaking. Sometimes kids get clinging, tearful and whiny. Sometimes they get rude and disrespectful. Sometimes they meltdown because they can’t hold it together. Sometimes they’re anxious and sometimes they’re depressed. Whatever you’re facing, it’s hard. I remember. I’m a mom. I got the looks, the unkind remarks in the grocery store. It hurt. There were times when I lost my temper and felt the mom guilt. And I discovered a way to alter the course of our story for good.

I believe
children
have an innate ability to grow in a positive direction. The
child
-therapist relationship is the element that encourages healing, where the
child
feels safe, supported, and is able to make those changes that lead to growth through exploring self (experiences, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors). When we meet a
child
's need, rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom. I focus on possibilities, strengths, and value differences through direct and indirect practices.

Does your
child
struggle with managing emotions? Are lagging social skills, anxiety, or acting out behaviors interfering with daily life? Are you feeling overwhelmed and at a loss for how to help? After spending 18 years as an early childhood educator in a local public school district, I transitioned to clinical therapy in order to work with families more directly in support of social/emotional skills and mental health. Counseling is a great opportunity for exploration and growth.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
