Whether I am seeing a child individually for play therapy; offering support to caregivers; utilizing attachment-focused interventions; collaborating on behavior modification; or seeing adults individually who are ready to heal from their own trauma; I continue to be inspired by the vulnerability and courage of those who are ready to change their lives!.
Love and nurturing are the cornerstones of my practice. From my youngest clients to my oldest, I believe that a positive connection in a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere encourages and empowers the children , families and adults I work with to heal and grow from the inside out! My focus for the past 10 years of my career has been on supporting children , families and individuals to reconnect with each other and themselves in a way that enhances their sense of peace, joy and fulfillment.

Your child and family's resiliency is built through a strong connection and a solid plan.
The relationship you and your child has with their counselor is the true measure of how helpful the counseling experience will be. I value developing a warm, positive, supportive and empathic environment for your family to overcome any challenge that you are facing. In our experience together, you will find healing and growth, and recognize your own strengths, and how they help you and your child work toward building a more positive and rewarding future. Both in your individual lives, and collectively within the family.

“Play provides a safe psychological distance from a child ’s problems and allows expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate for their development” (apt.
Play is the place where children ’s minds, hearts, and souls meet. Through Play Therapy, children are able to heal from distressing events such as, but not limited to, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, depression, adoption, foster care and attachment issues; and to improve in myriad areas such as impulse control, emotional regulation, ADHD, OCD, and ODD. As your child ’s therapist, my goal is to enable children to heal, so that they are empowered to “rise and shine” to their highest potential.

During my doctoral training, I specialized in working with children with a variety of issues.
As we journey through life, we can experience challenges that stifle our personal growth or block our connection with others. Sometimes, we feel ill-equipped, disappointed, alone, hurt, or afraid. But there is hope-- hope for understanding, peace, empowerment, and joy. Whether you would like to broaden your understanding of your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, or deepen your connection with others, there is hope and there is help. Together we can enhance self-awareness and other-awareness. We can work to understand and strengthen your ability to manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We can develop healthy problem-solving and life skills.

I enjoy working with all my clients, however, I have specific training working with troubled youth. The world is hard to navigate as adults and can be even harder as a young adult, teen, or adolescent. In my experience depression and anxiety are secondary to the trauma caused by unresolved issues. These issues affect both children and adults. This can often express in opposition to rules, defiance, self harming, alcohol and drug use. I can help. I understand what its like to feel misunderstood in a world filled with overwhelming decisions.

Please note, I do not currently have openings for new child clients, but do have limited openings for adult clients on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Visiting with a counselor can be a life changing experience. I work with clients from early childhood through all phases of adulthood. Everyone has a unique story, and I value the personal experiences, hopes, and dreams of all my clients. Partnering during a trusting counseling relationship can be one of the best ways to reach your goals and create lasting, positive change in your life. The relationship between counselor and client can create a vessel or space in which we can unpack and sort through your concerns with care, compassion, and confidentiality.

Take that step for yourself or your child today.
I am working toward my Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credentials. I am currently Provisionally Licensed (PLPC) and receiving clinical supervision from Susan Andree, LPC (Hawthorne Counseling, LLC). I especially enjoy being with individuals as they process the impact of various life experiences on their present ways of being. They learn how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have been helpful (or unhelpful) in their lives. They learn what to change and how to change. They discover boundaries and self-worth. They become empowered and more self-accepting. Evening/weekend availability.

I have training to work with children , adolescents, and adults with a wide range of concerns including stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-esteem, and relationship problems.
Life gets tough sometimes and everyone needs a little help. Sometimes that help comes from friends or family, but other times that help can come from a professional. Reaching out to a counselor is tough but frequently can be the first step towards improvement in life. It is important to find a counselor with whom you feel comfortable enough to do the tough work and talk about the hard issues. I enjoy learning whether that is from formal training and classwork or from the people I work with. I consider therapy a collaborative experience where we learn from each other.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
