I have experience treating anxiety, trauma, depression, bipolar mood disorder, life adjustment, grief and loss, care-giving issues, self esteem, stress, postpartum depression, compulsive gambling, family members dealing with addiction, dual diagnosis, and anger management.
I believe that everyone has the potential to grow and learn. Friends and family are great support at times, but sometimes people can benefit from more. I often tell people therapy is a little bit like having a coach. It is someone to set goals with, someone to hold you accountable, someone to cheer you on and help you navigate the road map of life. It is my goal to help you get on the track that is best suited for you and your family, and come up with a plan to help you stay the course!

I am licensed in MO and KS allowing me to offer telehealth sessions throughout both states and in-person sessions for individuals in the KC metro. Available for immediate day and evening appointments. For over 15 years, I have worked primarily with adults to help create long-term change, healing and transformation, instead of temporary band-aids. This is done by building a relationship that provides safety and acceptance, and ultimately promotes change, as well as using the tools and techniques that best fit the circumstance.

Your family may be feeling like it is being turned upside down as your developing young adult struggles to find their place in the world. I work within the family system to re-establish the balance that is necessary for a healthy, growing family and find order within the chaos. Teens and young people may appear to be rebelling; fighting back against all of the families efforts to offer guidance and support. We can work together to turn this energy into a productivity and success in academic, social, and all other aspects of life.

I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to form a close working relationship to resolve their concerns. I appreciate straightforward communication where clients provide me with honest feedback regarding the helpfulness (or not) of the interventions I recommend. With this information, treatment is adapted to fit the client's preferred style for healing. Clients and I forge a emotionally healing relationship wherein we identify treatment strategies to enhance emotional well-being, problem-solving, communication, symptom reduction, and personal growth.

I work with adults and teens age 14+ on problems ranging from getting over a breakup to overcoming a lifetime of trauma. I use humor and compassion alongside technique and knowledge to help clients calm their thoughts, develop meaningful connections with others, and resolve even long-standing problems. I use concepts from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), solution-focused therapy, and psychodynamic techniques to identify and challenge damaging thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, ultimately helping clients create a story of themselves that is authentic and empowering.

Having a therapist that you are comfortable with is key. Therapy can be short-term and sometimes the issues you are facing require a journey that takes more time. What do you need help with, and what can I help you with, to find solutions that work for best for you? Partnering with a therapist can really make a difference. I am non-judgmental and accepting. Many people are struggling now with isolation or no support system. Currently, I can help clients through Teletherapy. However, some can be seen in their home. We can set goals together! Options: Weekly / Bi-weekly . I will be doing video sessions only at this time.

I am only seeing clients virtually at this time. I have gravitated toward working with people who have experienced trauma, anxiety and depressive issues. I provide a judgment-free, supportive setting and aid the client in identifying their own inner strengths to help them find solutions to whatever difficulties they are experiencing. People want to feel safe and valued and I believe I can help with this. I believe people want quality services at a reasonable price. I can provide this as well.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
