I enjoy helping clients look inward, understand their role in the challenges they face, and identify innate strengths they can use to overcome them. We generally make peace with what we understand, so when unease seems to persist in our lives, it can often point to something internal that we have yet to acknowledge. My aim is simply to help others identify and integrate these parts of themselves into their lives.

I am passionate about helping people who struggle with anxiety, addiction, developmental trauma, depression, and relational issues. At the core of my approach is an attitude of warmth, acceptance, and faith in my client's innate capacity for healing and transformation. Often people come to therapy with a sense of disempowerment. The impulse to reach out in hope of finding a caring, safe, or 'true other' shows your innate wisdom and strength. We are all in desperate need of help and connection. The hope is that we can do more than just survive.

The works of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Carl Jung, Victor Frankl, and Joseph Campbell are guidelines to wholeness, meaning, and spirituality.
The people I see often feel worried, confused, sad, angry, or struggle with similar feelings. Many have lost a loved one or are in a troubled relationship. Others struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, abuse, or trauma. Still others seek meaning and purpose. Regardless of the problem or mix of problems, the goal is to have a richer, more satisfying life. As well as listening with care, my style is to talk openly, sharing my thoughts and feelings about you and your situation. I bring a lifetime of success and failure, joys and sorrows, to my work.

I believe that each person is the expert on his/her life, and that we all have what we need to do what we need to do. I help people identify the resources they have, and how to focus those strengths on the problem/issue they are dealing with. I see any problem as a valuable source of information which we can use to guide us in the direction we want to go. I believe that relationships, spirituality, and physical health are three of the most important sources of strength/energy that we can tap into for strength.

Let’s foster connection to your own spirituality, support growth, and find peace in your life.
Don’t continue doing life closed off and disconnected. Open yourself up to connection and find the peace you’ve been needing. I want to help, but more importantly, I want to point you back to you. You don’t deserve to keep living in the dark. There is hope for all the parts of you.

I specialize in PTSD, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, couples, work performance, spirituality, and addictions, and have certifications in those and other areas.
People want to feel good about themselves and have a sense of self-worth, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-love, When those don't exist it's mentally, emotionally, and psychologically painful and can result in various types of mental health struggles. People try their best to manage with the tools and skillsets they have. What may have helped and been needed at one point in their life may not be working now. That is not a flaw in the person, it is a lack of the necessary tools/skillsets. Recognizing this a person can stop blaming or judging themselves or others.

Many clients struggling with anxiety, depression, familial/relationship struggles, OCD, perfectionism, low self-esteem, and issues of spirituality have found our work together helpful.
My style is integrative. I work from a psychodynamic foundation but utilize helpful evidence-based modalities to tailor therapy to meet my clients' unique needs. What this means is: I work collaboratively with my clients to ease distressing symptoms, but also explore the deeper patterns behind them.

I enjoy working with couples, individuals, families and addressing spirituality when desired.
You wonder how things got this way, you used to feel connected with your partner. You feel alone, confused, frustrated, misunderstood, rejected etc. You reach out, you are trying…it turns to an argument or distancing. It often seems like a blame game with defensive reactions. How do you turn this around and feel safe with your partner again, or other loved ones? You are concerned about the outcome, yet it’s not getting better. Something needs to change but you’re unsure how to approach things.

As humans, we live in intersecting relationships: the earth, society, each other, work, spirituality (for some), individual and generational history
I'm interested in helping people transform suffering into renewed purpose rather than just coping. Psychotherapy is both an art and a science informed by neurobiology and research. I can help you learn regulation and how to care for yourself -- maybe for the first time. I am trained in EMDR therapy and can arrange "Walk and Talk" sessions for some clients.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
