I believe that each person is the expert on his/her life, and that we all have what we need to do what we need to do. I help people identify the resources they have, and how to focus those strengths on the problem/issue they are dealing with. I see any problem as a valuable source of information which we can use to guide us in the direction we want to go. I believe that relationships, spirituality , and physical health are three of the most important sources of strength/energy that we can tap into for strength.

It's hard to make sense of what's happening today in the world. It's also hard to make sense of what's happening with yourself. You feel so many things you can't even explain. As humans, we live in intersecting relationships: the earth, society, each other, work, spirituality (for some), individual history. and our changing identities. Identifying and managing all of these relationships while moving in place is dizzyingly daunting. You want change, stability, a sense of purpose, better connection, less strife and aggression. You want peace of mind and more peace on earth! I can help you with the first, at least.

I specialize in PTSD, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, couples, work performance, spirituality , and addictions, and have certifications in those and other areas.
People want to feel good about themselves and have a sense of self-worth, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-love, When those don't exist it's mentally, emotionally, and psychologically painful and can result in various types of mental health struggles. People try their best to manage with the tools and skillsets they have. What may have helped and been needed at one point in their life may not be working now. That is not a flaw in the person, it is a lack of the necessary tools/skillsets. Recognizing this a person can stop blaming or judging themselves or others.

Do you ever wish others would put in half of the effort you put in into the relationship? Are you tired of initiating plans and not being reciprocated? Do you feel like you don’t have a voice or even feel you don’t know who you are anymore? People-pleasing behaviors may have kept us safe from conflicts and dangers but could have also costed us resentment, low self-esteem, anger, anxiety, and depression. What if we can learn to love ourselves the way we love others? What if self-love doesn’t mean we stop caring for others, but we start caring for ourselves the way we deserve to be?

The weight you are carrying is real. It may be the pain of the past, the pressures of daily life, or the lack of something indescribable. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or anger. Over time you may have begun to feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and ashamed for not being able to keep up with it all. In the words of Glennon Doyle, “Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this?” I believe that deep healing is a process of connection, freedom, and joy. Together we can work toward reconnecting to what matters most to you.

My approach to psychotherapy is largely informed by the Analytical Psychology of Carl Jung. I believe in a theory of personal development that emphasizes the integration of all parts of the self into an experience of personal wholeness. This work is often referred to as "depth" psychology because it requires some familiarity and/or curiosity about one's own inner-world. We may explore the symbolic direction of dreams, psychological complexes, relationship patterns, family of origin dynamics, personal self-concepts, trauma histories, spiritual sensibilities, identity issues, personal purpose, & how the psyche manifests in the body.

Sometimes we have experiences that make us feel different, out of place, foreign and even unwelcome. Life can bring challenges, pain, and experiences that do not always make sense to us. It's easy to become trapped in those moments, in need of help. I believe in being someone who will listen with unconditional positive regard, without judgement, to you and your story. I seek to help you see your situation from a different vantage point in order to discover something new about yourself and your world.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
