You said yes to Jesus as you understood him. You might have been 5 or 25 when you prayed the prayer, believing what you heard from those you trusted. You've worked so hard to think and feel the right things, to speak and act the right way. Now, you’re wondering if there’s a better story, one more faithful to Jesus himself, than the one you were given––the God-and-country story, the get-out-of-hell story, the pie-in-the-sky-by-and-by story. You're sick of church as business, pastor as CEO or celebrity. What does it look like for you to be a living, breathing human following the living, breathing, reigning Jesus?

I offer therapy sessions in-person or online via video.
Welcome to Cicada Song counseling! As a lifelong mental health advocate and a therapist for over a decade I have developed three convictions central to my practice (1) Your relationship with your therapist should be collaborative and authentic. (2) Therapy is not just about talk. It’s about progress towards quality of life (3) You already contain everything you need to heal. I aim to provide space where you can build security within yourself to move through pain. We will identify and build upon your existing strengths and coping skills. We will use curiosity to reflect on challenging memories and develop new perspectives.

I provide a specialty therapy for people with a high degree of self-control (perfectionists, introverts, and worriers). Have you ever thought that you might have too much of a good thing? It turns out possessing too much self-control can impair our ability to relax, adapt to life's transitions, and genuinely connect with others.

You're tired of second-guessing everything. You've worked so hard to hold it all together, but deep down it feels like you're stuck- anxious, disconnected, or just plain numb. You might feel like you're too much and not enough all at the same time. You overthink, overextend, and then crash. You want to feel calm in your body and confident in who you are without having to prove yourself or perform for connection. That's where I come in. I help women unravel the old patterns (like people-pleasing, shutdown, perfectionism, and shame) so you can feel more grounded, more you.

Making the choice to begin therapy is not a sign of weakness; choosing to deal with stressors is actually a sign of incredible strength. Therapy is for everyone. Life is crazy and often hard, and we are not pre-programmed with all the answers. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and unclear on how to make things better. I know that you and your relationships are worth the time and investment. My areas of specialization include working with couples to communicate more respectfully and authentically and helping adult individuals navigate life transitions.

Everyone deserves to feel alive, free, and deeply connected relationally. Sometimes things handed down to us from our past or difficult events in the present interfere with our ability to feel this way. Our culture often demands that we toughen up, hold it in, and keep hustling. Often this leaves us feeling alone, anxious, depressed, or unfulfilled. Maybe even asking the questions, "Why aren't the relationships in my life working?" "Why do I want to withdraw?" "Why do I feel alone?" Or "Why do I feel so tired all the time?" I work with individuals and couples ready to explore the reasons why they feel unfulfilled or stuck in life.

It's hard to find a therapist. Especially when you're not feeling your best. I applaud you for getting this far. Now it's time to invest in your relationship with yourself. I know what it’s like to feel alone with your problems. Maybe you have no one to talk to. It's hard finding good friends! Or maybe you feel bad making your friends, your family, or your partner listen to your problems again. I know what that feels like, and I’m here. I’m ready to listen. It’s time to let go of anxiety, sadness, frustration, trauma, anger, and shame. I want to process these things with you. You don’t have to go through this alone anymore.

I offer therapy sessions in-person at an office in Kansas City or online via video.
Therapy should always be a judgment-free zone. If you're looking for someone who’s kind, genuine, and accepting, you’ve found me! I connect well with those who feel like they don’t quite fit in, because I’ve often felt that way myself. As a proud Mexican-American woman and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I get what it’s like to walk through life with your own unique story. My friends often say I’ve got an edgy personality, but I’d say I’m just confident and unapologetic. I like to keep it real—what you see is what you get, and that’s how I show up in therapy!

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
