I find the greatest joy in working with families to repair and build nurturing relationships. Coming from a playful perspective I love to help children and their parents find their self-worth and express their true feelings in ways that they can understand each other. I utilize my training and background in child development studies to help children and parents understand each other in appropriate ways. I keep in mind that each child and
family
is unique, seeking to understand without judgment.

It can be overwhelmingly scary to know where to begin in your healing journey. Wounds can build upon one another until it all feels like a tangled mess. Childhood and
family
wounds can dictate the lens in which you see the world. Looking through that lens can be complex and difficult to navigate alone. Whether the symptoms you are experiencing are affecting your current circumstances, creating self-worth issues or relationship difficulties, I love to meet you where you are at, and help you develop goals that lead to a fulfilling life.

I started out as a
family
attorney and have worked in many areas of social services, including as a
family
advocate and clinical therapist in community settings.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, down or frustrated? Or is your child having a hard time with attention or adjusting to a new situation? It can be difficult to know where to turn when you’re new to these problems, or when the help you’ve gotten hasn’t been enough. I work with adults, kids, and parents who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, ADHD, or other parenting or mental health issues. I can help you get a handle on what’s going on and learn new ways to cope with chronic problems. While we can’t prevent every curve ball in our lives, we can learn ways to decrease our stress and improve well-being.

After moving to Kansas City, I pursued a MA in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, with an emphasis in marriage and
family therapy
.
For over ten years, I have worked to help individuals and couples empower themselves and achieve desired change in their lives. I believe in a direct, yet compassionate approach to therapy, which stems from my extensive training and experience practicing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Act and Commitment Therapy, therapy for high-conflict couples, and behavioral interventions for eating disordered clients. I focus on utilizing evidence-based therapies, self care, gratitude, mindfulness, skills training, and the client's personal value system in order to nurture hope and help clients achieve their goals.

My approach to psychotherapy is largely informed by the Analytical Psychology of Carl Jung. I believe in a theory of personal development that emphasizes the integration of all parts of the self into an experience of personal wholeness. This work is often referred to as "depth" psychology because it requires some familiarity and/or curiosity about one's own inner-world. We may explore the symbolic direction of dreams, psychological complexes, relationship patterns,
family
of origin dynamics, personal self-concepts, trauma histories, spiritual sensibilities, identity issues, personal purpose, & how the psyche manifests in the body.

family
in reaching your goals, whatever that looks like.

Accepting new clients! I'm so glad you are here. The hardest part of getting help is reaching out to make that first appointment and you are one step closer. Childhood mental health issues have been rising for awhile now and we saw an even bigger increase the past few years. Not only are our children struggling, it is hard work learning to parent our children with mental health needs. Navigating depression, anxiety, mood swings, trauma, etc is not meant to be done alone. I believe in working alongside you, your child, and
family
as we tackle issues together.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
