I have been in private practice for over twenty years. During those years I have counseled both individual clients and couples with a variety of issues. These issues include relationship issues, life transitions, abuse , depression, eating disorders, grief, stress, anxiety, sexual identity, and parenting issues. I believe we all go through difficult periods in our lives where we need someone to talk to who can give understanding, support, guidance, tools, and suggestions. I believe that counseling can often help our lives become less painful but instead become more hopeful and fulfilling.

Yes I have availability. No, I'm not in network with insurance. Your out of network benefits may cover. I'm very easy to talk to. Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you overwhelmed? Do you have a sense of doom? Have friends and/or family commented on the amount of alcohol or drugs you can take? If so, you may benefit from seeing me. Since 1996, I have worked extensively with people struggling with Substance Use Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, and Grief. I also take a secular approach to those who have experienced religious trauma. If you have struggled with any of these issues, I can definitely help.

I have enjoyed working with people from all walks of life, including survivors of domestic violence , members of the LGBT+ community, people involved in the legal system, and people who just don't feel like they fit in.
Coming to therapy can be scary! Do you worry that your therapist won’t “get it” or will tell you how to live your life? I understand that it can be hard to ask for help, and that it takes a brave person to decide to make changes in their life. I believe therapy should be a time where you feel comfortable and safe to be your true self! I am a strengths-focused therapist who won’t judge you, tell you what to do, or give you advice you didn’t ask for. You are the expert in your life, and your problems aren't too much- my job is to help you understand yourself better, help you function in your daily life, and help you find healing.

My experience is in helping families heal after abuse and/or trauma but I enjoy working with a variety of presenting issues.
I find the greatest joy in working with families to repair and build nurturing relationships. Coming from a playful perspective I love to help children and their parents find their self-worth and express their true feelings in ways that they can understand each other. I utilize my training and background in child development studies to help children and parents understand each other in appropriate ways. I keep in mind that each child and family is unique, seeking to understand without judgment.

I treat all sorts of mental disorders including depression, anxiety, panic, OCD, PTSD, Adult Aspergers Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Substance abuse , relationship and family issues.
Mental health is part of your physical health. You cannot have one without the other. No one is exempt from facing mental health struggles at one time or another in their life. It is not uncommon during times of mental health struggles, either it be an isolated incident of panic, short-term and long-term anxiety, tragedy, situational depression, or circumstances that were out of your control that caused you to have a "new normal." Therapy will alleviate these stressors through a process of personal insight, change, and opening your eyes to a new way of seeing your life and how you react to it.

) and substance abuse /dependence.
Making the decision to seek help is the the first step towards living a healthier, happier life. The second step is finding the right therapist. I believe that success in therapy is dependent on the strength of the relationship between the counselor and client. I view myself as an advocate, a catalyst for change, and an objective sounding board, rather than an expert who can listen to your problems for an hour and then magically know how to run your life better than you do. You are the expert on you! My job is to help you learn how to help yourself.

I am an experienced psychologist who has worked for 35 years with persons who have suffered complex loss and trauma including child abuse and neglect, divorce, domestic violence , family dysfunction, death, illness, unemployment, poverty, crime, and natural and man-made disasters of all kinds.
The vast majority people who seek therapy have, through no fault of their own, suffered loss and trauma which has caused very painful consequences for their lives. The best way to heal from those losses is to first have them accurately identified and then to be gradually helped to express one's thoughts and feelings about them to a supportive listener. With such support one's experiences are validated as real and one begins to recognize one's strength and courage under the most challenging of circumstances. The opportunity to speak the truth about the painful facts of one's life to a supportive therapist is what heals.

I have experience working with symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma and abuse , and grief and loss.
It is a true honor to meet my clients in the therapeutic space. I am reminded each time I meet a new client of the immense bravery and vulnerability it takes to show up for yourself. I believe counseling can help to ground us in the present, while exploring the parts of ourselves that need healing. The therapeutic space can serve as a holding container, while the internal and external work happens. My vision is to offer a safe environment to express your thoughts and emotions while in connection with one another.

Hello! congrats on starting one of the most difficult first steps of healing: finding a therapist that is a good fit for you. Starting therapy can feel like such an overwhelming process. Looking through pages of therapists trying to gauge if they can understand you and what you’ve been through, worrying if you will be judged for your decisions, reactions, thoughts, or history. If you are feeling any of that, you are definitely not alone.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
