Since the beginning of my career I have worked extensively with mindfulness based therapies like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy.
Life throws so much at us. Often our natural instinct is to cling to the happy times and push away pain and suffering. However, learning to accept difficult situations and accept change is possible through guidance and feedback. Learning to act effectively to accept change and to face the places where we need to improve is an act of courage that does not appear overnight. I believe in evidence-based and practical strategies to help my clients improve their lives and emotional well-being. I believe that change is not only possible but inevitable.

We may use tools from DBT , EMDR, and other mindfulness and body-centered therapies to treat depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
I am a counselor and yoga teacher specializing in mindfulness-based interventions for healing anxiety, depression, and trauma. I began my counseling career with a background of nearly 20 years teaching yoga, meditation, and mindfulness to groups and individuals. I integrate the tools and techniques of yoga practice and theory with more traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy, DBT , and EMDR, in order to treat people holistically - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change" - Carl Rogers. Accepting difficult situations in life and moving towards change is a journey you don't have to face alone. I have 10+ years of experience working with adolescents and adults who struggle with overwhelming emotions, feeling disconnected from others, poor relationships, poor sense of identity, thoughts of suicide and self-harm. These symptoms and behaviors are often a result of feeling unheard, invalidated and/or traumatic experiences.

Therapy methods used include ACT, CBT, DBT , FFTT and Mindfulness.
Sometimes we experience life changing events that cause us lose sight of our hopes and dreams. Our fears can deceive us into believing that we will never be okay again. We do not have to be defined by what has happened to us. I believe that no matter what we have been through we have the potential to create for ourselves, a happy, rich and full life worth living. It is not easy to overcome the bad experiences but it is possible. Therapy can increase psychological flexibility and allow us to not be open again. If you are tired of being limited and ready to make real changes therapy can help you create the life you wish to have.

I work from a compassionate, person-centered perspective that includes Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT ), Internal Family Systems, and EMDR.
Suffering, while valuable, doesn’t have to define you or your story. If you’re wanting to move beyond old hurts, or feeling stuck despite desiring change, together we can re-author your story to include healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and being. In addition to my office in Brookside, KCMO, I am also offering sessions via Telehealth for those who do not wish to leave their homes due to COVID-19 (client must reside in MO).

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
