With nearly 20 years of experience working with
children
and a counseling focus on working within family systems, I work with youth and parents alike to help find solutions and foster healthier relationships within the family dynamics.
Family dynamics are often complicated and difficult. While we often find comfort and stability within our family, it is all too common to experience problems that we’re just not quite prepared to address. Parents may feel unsure of themselves or overwhelmed by increasing demands on their time and attention.
Children
and teens may struggle to feel they can open up with their parents for several reasons. Communication breaks down and the family that once felt so close knit is starting to drift apart. While we know we need help, it can be difficult to take that first step and reach out.

child
development studies to help
children
and parents understand each other in appropriate ways. I keep in mind that each

I approach my work from a systemics perspective and work with families, couples, and individuals with a specialty in working with
children
and adolescents.
We all have times where we just feel a little (or a lot) overwhelmed, even though most of us pretend we don’t (myself included). Or times when we think, “Nothing I’m doing is working with my kid (or husband, wife, sister, bestie, aunt, grandma, well…you get the idea)!” We delude ourselves into thinking everyone else has it all figured out. They don’t. And, it’s okay that you don’t. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, at a loss for how to help your loved one, or just unsure of the next steps in your relationship, therapy can help.

The angry, argumentative, and underperforming
child
is often seen by others as the product of lax parenting. This unfortunate characterization has had a great impact on the way our
children
are viewed by schools, employers, and society in general. The fact is parents often exhaust various recommended "fixes" and desperately want things to be normal.
I have over 25 years of experience working with
children
and families. I understand the daily struggles parents routinely face. I know how school performance, relationships, and behavior are impacted when
children
struggle. I understand the frustrations associated with a
child
who "acts out" and underperforms.

Do you struggle in your life with strong reactions to events that seem out of your control? Do you find yourself captured by anger, upset, fear, or anxiety? I know how hard it is to make real changes that will lead to lasting peace, joy and effectiveness. I also know that it is absolutely possible to change course and rebuild.

Life has a way of paralyzing us with negative “what if’s?" What if there was a way to become unstuck? What if someone sat in the muck with you? What if you could finally get through a conversation with your
child
without yelling or storming off? Those are what if’s we can explore together. Let's create a space where you feel seen, valued, and understood. Together we can create a space where things feel less lonely, complex, or overwhelming. A space where you feel like you have your
child
's spark back. Wouldn't you like life to feel a little more possible? A little less lonely? To see smiles instead of tears?

Are you seeking insight on your
child
's behaviors? A place for your
child
to heal and gain confidence and self-understanding? I would love to work with your
child
or teenager (ages 3-18).
Childhood and adolescence are times of growth, imagination, beauty, and connection. Being a young person can also present its own unique challenges.
Children
and adolescents experiencing trauma, loss, mental health struggles, behavior issues at home or school or self esteem/body image issues need a safe, caring presence in their life to listen and walk with them toward healing and self-understanding. If your
child
or teen is struggling, or if you are a parent seeking a light at the end of the tunnel for your
child
's behaviors, I'm here to help.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
