Taking the first step in finding a therapist can be an overwhelming and intimidating experience. This I know, as well as how important it is to find someone that you can be open with and trust. I work with people who experience anything from anxiety , depression and trauma related disorders to pre and postpartum mothers. Navigating life can be difficult and scary at times, just know that you don't have to do this alone.

It is a privilege to work with clients on personal and relational health, healing attachment wounds, creating a more secure sense of identity, and understanding one's sense of purpose while navigating the emotional distress that comes from my client's experiences with trauma, anxiety , depression, rejection, resentment, grief, infidelity, and disappointment.
The path to wellness and freedom involves choosing to start or continue a journey of healing and restoration. My desire is to help individuals, couples, and families along their own unique paths of transformation, change, and growth. I believe that emotional and relational wellness are an important piece of a holistic picture of health. I am a proponent of therapy because I have personally experienced the benefits and the sense of empowerment that comes from the process.

I can help any person who has lost the thread of meaning in their life. A person who might even be asking themselves, What is the point of continuing on? There might be past traumas, depression and/or anxiety , perhaps harmful behaviors they can't seem to shake. There might be a great deal of fear. But ultimately, they need a fresh perspective on what it means for them to be alive, and to regain the sense that their choices matter.

Dr. Maxwell specializes in treating chronically turbulent emotions, as well as difficulties relating comfortably and effectively to others. Sometimes these experiences go along with a feeling of not knowing who one is, as well as making rash choices one often regrets. These experiences may or may not be related to abuse(s) and/or neglect experienced in one’s childhood and teenage years. Clinically, these experiences sometimes manifest as personality disorders and/or complex posttraumatic stress disorder. He also helps people curb unruly anxiety , combat avoidance, disrupt depressive thinking patterns, and reshape unhelpful habits.

Depression, trauma, anxiety , relationship conflict and so many other things can impact our lives.
I am not the type of therapist who will just nod along and tell you to go to the gym. Sure, exercise is good, but I want to go deeper than that. Does life always feel chaotic and overwhelming? Do you have questions and uncertainties about your relationships? Maybe you deal with thoughts that you’d rather just not wake up tomorrow. You shouldn’t have to feel that way. You can create a life and relationships that make you feel happy and healthy. Let’s get to work.

Mental health is part of your physical health. You cannot have one without the other. No one is exempt from facing mental health struggles at one time or another in their life. It is not uncommon during times of mental health struggles, either it be an isolated incident of panic , short-term and long-term anxiety , tragedy, situational depression, or circumstances that were out of your control that caused you to have a "new normal." Therapy will alleviate these stressors through a process of personal insight, change, and opening your eyes to a new way of seeing your life and how you react to it.

I have experience with trauma, depression, racial injustice, anxiety , stress management, grief counseling, clinical assessments, group work and motivational coaching.
I enjoy working with individuals of all ages that are open to honesty, transparency and the process of change. It can be difficult to reach out to others for support. There are many facets of our lives that prompt the need to develop additional coping skills and boundaries to navigate through life. I am open to assist in that process.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
