Kennedie's passion is to empower individuals and couples to overcome personal obstacles that constrain or cause stress in their personal and intimate relationships. Research proves that unhealthy (interpersonal) relationships can cause both emotional and physical distress, while healthy relationships can enhance and improve one’s overall purpose and well-being. Kennedie believes both individuals and couples can enrich the quality of these relationships through the practice of (several) therapeutic modalities that are evidenced-based interventions.

Any St. Louis rehabilitation center can provide treatment; MIA provides the difference. There are many drug rehab centers, but few of these rehab centers compare to Midwest Institute for Addiction's programs. This differentiation goes beyond our comprehensive, individualized, and evidence based treatment model and focuses on the quality of services that we offer. There is a lack of separation in the minds of professional service providers when considering the difference between a product offered and the service that coincides with that product. The MIA difference is the ability to offer quality services that coincide with our quality treatment.

I am a second-generation Christian family therapist who has been in practice since 1987, married for 34 years, 2 adult twin daughters, and now 2 sons (both daughters married). My overall philosophy is to assist clients in bringing balance to their lives by examining the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of their lives. It is important to see the individual as a part of a system, as what may work for one person may not work for another due to current family dynamics and unresolved issues from their past.

We are not meant to live life alone, but rather deeply involved in relationships. Some of these relationships are highly successful, while others have come with great loss, significant struggle or just the every day difficulty of learning to live and enjoy life with another person. I believe in the value of working through personal problems in the context of building stronger relationships. I will help you work through this on a personal level or with whomever you are needing to have a restored relationship with.

Transitions are a natural progression in life, which at times can leave us feeling alone, overwhelmed, and terrified. Much like the seasons; our hopes, dreams, and relationships change. Maneuvering through these chapters in our lives can be a daunting process. In my experience, when a person can share their struggles within therapy, they can begin to better understand their thoughts, emotions, and how this influences their relationships with others.

I have been a practicing clinical social worker for the past eight years, and I firmly hold the belief that meeting my clients where they're at is essential to helping them improve. It's for this reason that my ideal client is someone who desires an understanding of their mental health condition, is ready to make changes, and understands that therapy is a process and they're willing to take that journey together. I work best with people who would like help with treating a range of Eating Disorders, Obsessive and Compulsive Disorders, and Mood Disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
