Family
dynamics are often complicated and difficult. While we often find comfort and stability within our
family
, it is all too common to experience problems that we’re just not quite prepared to address. Parents may feel unsure of themselves or overwhelmed by increasing demands on their time and attention. Children and teens may struggle to feel they can open up with their parents for several reasons. Communication breaks down and the
family
that once felt so close knit is starting to drift apart. While we know we need help, it can be difficult to take that first step and reach out.

I work from a compassionate, person-centered perspective that includes Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal
Family
Systems, and EMDR.
Suffering, while valuable, doesn’t have to define you or your story. If you’re wanting to move beyond old hurts, or feeling stuck despite desiring change, together we can re-author your story to include healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and being. In addition to my office in Brookside, KCMO, I am also offering sessions via Telehealth for those who do not wish to leave their homes due to COVID-19 (client must reside in MO).

Hi, I’m Katherine, and I’m glad you found me. I love working with individuals and couples who seek to carve out a path of hope and newly imagined potential for themselves. Whether that’s moving through a transition, trauma, loss, or just wanting to feel “unstuck”, I accompany my clients through the muddy waters of emotions and life circumstances toward greater clarity and new possibilities, finding a more full version of self. Attuning to your own well of intuition and finding a sense of direction within your own dreams is what we can work toward together.

Find what you truly seek. You've spent enough time searching. Let's get you out of this place. You see the traps you keep falling into, the ones you can’t make it through alone. You know better but need help to get there. Find liberation from your bad habits. Caring so much about meaningless thoughts, tangling yourself in webs of superficiality, losing yourself to old coping mechanisms. Be done with all of it. Let’s do something about those familiar grooves you get stuck in. I work with clients who can see their patterns and behaviors and know there’s a better way. You wanting to change and grow is the key ingredient.

Life is hard, and everyone needs support at one time or another. If you're experiencing anxiety, depression, tough relationships, or difficult transitions, you're not alone. You might lack confidence in your recent life choices. You might feel as if you don't have many options right now. You might feel stuck in a never-ending cycle of the "same old". Again, I say... you're not alone.

Did you feel neglected and unloved when you were a child? Did you feel lonely and ostracized if you tried to tell your parents or other adults about your feelings or if you tried to ask them questions about life? In your adult life, do you have difficulty relating to others? Do you feel depressed and alienated from others? Do you have difficulty knowing your own feelings or how you feel in your own body? Are you afraid to trust yourself, to be yourself? I've worked for 20 years with adults abused, traumatized, and/or neglected in childhood. .

I am a second-generation Christian
family therapist
who has been in practice since 1987, married for 34 years, 2 adult twin daughters, and now 2 sons (both daughters married). My overall philosophy is to assist clients in bringing balance to their lives by examining the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of their lives. It is important to see the individual as a part of a system, as what may work for one person may not work for another due to current
family
dynamics and unresolved issues from their past.

Transgender clients and
family
members seeking assessment or counseling services can expect a safe space, and respectful, non-pathologizing, collaborative care.
My approach to therapy is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). A core idea in ACT is that trying too hard to get rid of or control our emotions tends to backfire. Instead of trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings (e.g., anxiety & depression), I will help you learn to react differently to them so that you can keep your focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life based on what’s important to you. We will work together to set meaningful goals to address your concerns–whether they relate to life transitions, depression, anxiety, body image, grief/loss, job or academic stress, or gender & sexuality.

With 30 years experience in mental health, I have a conviction about the human capacity to grow, develop, and adapt throughout life. I appreciate that each person brings to therapy a unique self: the combination of one's personal characteristics, early
family
relationships, and life experiences. I practice from a psychodynamic perspective to better understand your current situation in a safe therapeutic environment of curiosity and collaboration.

Because of my
family therapy
experience couples seek me because I understand the dynamic of males and process fairly.
Check out our website for more details! I became a therapist because of a void that has persisted for decades. A void that allowed black and brown people to be left to find sometimes inadequate ways of dealing with real mental health issues. As you search you will find very few people that look like me that is in the profession of supporting mental health. This is unfortunate. Although my caseload is hugely diverse, what comforts my clients is I represent what in my field is lacking...a representative from a disenfranchised group of people helping to build up the individual, repairing relationships and making families whole.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
