I enjoy working with all my clients, however, I have specific training working with troubled youth. The world is hard to navigate as adults and can be even harder as a young adult, teen , or adolescent . In my experience depression and anxiety are secondary to the trauma caused by unresolved issues. These issues affect both children and adults. This can often express in opposition to rules, defiance, self harming, alcohol and drug use. I can help. I understand what its like to feel misunderstood in a world filled with overwhelming decisions.

I think we are all wired for and worthy of love and connection. Whether that is connection to ourselves or to others, I believe the desire to belong lives inside each of us. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. There can be so many places where shame, doubt, old wounds, and miscommunication disorient and disconnect us. As a therapist, I consider it a great privilege to be invited into your world and to get to partner with you as we collaboratively work through some of the things that might be keeping you stuck.

Wouldn't it be nice to feel in control of your emotions, to not have so many ups and downs from day to day? Your inner voice is downright disrespectful and has nothing but constant criticism. It tells you you're not good enough and that it's all your fault. Your anxiety is high, your motivation is low, and your emotions are all over the place. Some nights you can hardly get to sleep. This can't be life. There must be something wrong with me, you think. If this sounds familiar, we should talk.

Are you feeling stuck and don’t know what to do or where to go? Have all your old ways of coping stopped working? We all need support and guidance along our journey. Sometimes we need more than what our family and friends can provide. Everyone has the capacity to live a life full of joy, happiness and wholeness. When circumstances happen in your life that make this difficult to live, you may need some extra help. Together, you and I can find the right path to create the life you are meant to live.

Are you feeling sad, depressed, anxious, angry, mean, inadequate, unworthy, etc.? Is it difficult to understand and accept those feelings? Typically, we reject what hurts us and only welcome and entertain the "feel good" moments and emotions. Your story is important. I am here to listen and support you as you go through your journey in becoming the person you want to be. I will honor your uniqueness and help you identify what is important to you, your needs and your strengths. You have everything you need within you.

I know therapists are expected to start these bio’s off by sharing what they offer prospective clients, along with their viewpoint on therapy. That info is important, but my primary focus is to make sure you understand that it is YOU that really matters. Meridith Monk said "That inner voice has both gentleness and clarity. So, to get to authenticity, you really keep going down to the bone, to the honesty, and the inevitability of something.” I want to walk with you thru this process.

Keeping passion and connection in relationships while also thriving as individuals is a goal that many of us have. Balancing these aspects of life can be difficult, especially when life stressors, mental or emotional disorders, or trauma present themselves. My goal is to help clients achieve their goals of connection and personal growth, while challenging them to act on the best parts of themselves. I am passionate about working with couples struggling with intimacy and desire issues. My approach in working with couples centers on differentiation based therapies and encourages both individual and couple growth.

I consider what my client and their environment can bring to their process of healing. I believe that I am an active participant, encouraging the process of change alongside my client. My goal is to offer support and strategies so that my clients can decide for themselves what is appropriate for them. I strive to help my clients gain perspective and a deeper understanding of their lives so they are empowered to make meaningful breakthroughs for themselves. In addition to individual therapy, I enjoy working with couples helping them to relate better with one another or to cope with family issues in healthier ways.

I believe that all humans have a resilient spirit which allows them to overcome any obstacle before them. Sometimes we forget who we are or perhaps we never fully knew. Maybe we felt we were never able to be our authentic selves. It's possible we think there's something wrong with us or we're broken. Or is it that we struggle to manage mental health symptoms and we become emotionally deregulated and filled with shame? Maybe you think that you have gone to far and there is no hope for you. You are not alone. I have helped countless people with stories like these and many more. What ever it is that is holding you back, I can help.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
