The angry, argumentative, and underperforming child is often seen by others as the product of lax parenting. This unfortunate characterization has had a great impact on the way our children are viewed by schools, employers, and society in general. The fact is parents often exhaust various recommended "fixes" and desperately want things to be normal. I have over 25 years of experience working with children and families. I understand the daily struggles parents routinely face. I know how school performance, relationships, and behavior are impacted when children struggle. I understand the frustrations associated with a child who "acts out" and underperforms.

Would you like to feel more connected and valued in your life and relationships? Together we can enter your world as you see it, including what you believe about yourself, both good and bad. Behaviors and emotions make sense when we see them clearly from the perspective of the person, given their history and the lessons they have learned. I enjoy meeting people who want more from their life and are willing to put in the work to get there. My goal is to provide a trusting environment where you, the client, can feel valued and free to share yourself without the worry of judgement.

When I meet with people, I am told that I am approachable, understanding, and humorous! I know what it's like to be a client and to be asked to pour out my life; therefore, I adapt my therapy sessions to you and allow you to share what you desire! I do what I do to help others as I have been helped, and my goal is to assist you in achieving your goals!! I understand how to incorporate Christianity into your session, though also respect your desire to not include any beliefs whatsoever. I am flexible and understanding.

Your family may be feeling like it is being turned upside down as your developing young adult struggles to find their place in the world. I work within the family system to re-establish the balance that is necessary for a healthy, growing family and find order within the chaos. Teens and young people may appear to be rebelling; fighting back against all of the families efforts to offer guidance and support. We can work together to turn this energy into a productivity and success in academic, social, and all other aspects of life.

We all have challenges in life. Sometimes those challenges overwhelm our natural coping abilities. Sometimes relationships feel unmanageable. Sometimes habits have become addictions. Sometimes we get so worried about the kids, work, LIFE that we stop sleeping, eating or exercising. Sometimes things feel so dark it feels hard to go on. Sometimes we just lose enthusiasm for things we used to enjoy. Sometimes we just feel worthless and hopeless.

I have been in practice for 30 years as a clinical psychologist. I provide a safe and supportive environment for my clients. I use mindfulness techniques for therapy in addition to a compassionate presence. These approaches include mindfulness to resolving situational depression, teaching clients to overcome overwhelming emotional situations, relaxation techniques to quiet your mind and body, and therapy to assist each client to function each day with calmness and clarity. I am a very proactive therapist, allowing individuals to explore their own thoughts, feelings, behavior patterns, and develop an action plan that best suits their personal growth.

I enjoy working with all my clients, however, I have specific training working with troubled youth. The world is hard to navigate as adults and can be even harder as a young adult, teen, or adolescent. In my experience depression and anxiety are secondary to the trauma caused by unresolved issues. These issues affect both children and adults. This can often express in opposition to rules, defiance, self harming, alcohol and drug use. I can help. I understand what its like to feel misunderstood in a world filled with overwhelming decisions.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
