The clients I serve are often at a crossroads in their life story and unsure of how to close one chapter and begin anew. Clients I enjoy working with recognize that counseling continues outside of the session in self reflection, exploring behavior change, and shifting how we think and relate to ourselves. I find that counseling helps meet goals and needs as diverse as the client, and sometimes goals arise throughout the course of the relationship. No one needs a "good reason" to come to counseling, for the desire to reach out and try will always be sufficient.

CHANGE: "to make or become different." Chances are if you're checking out websites for therapists, you're likely thinking about change-either change that you're interested in initiating or change that has been thrust upon you. Regardless, it can be a daunting experience and taking the first step is sometimes the most challenging. Take a look at the information here and on my website, and give me a call if you'd like to talk.

I love to work with clients who are motivated to heal the trauma of their past. That trauma can be due to Family of Origin, abuse, neglect, LGBTQIA+ Struggles, medical trauma, religious trauma, sexual abuse, a single event, or a combination of these. Often this trauma contributes to or plays out as personality disorders or other difficult behaviors. Typically, my clients want to gain function in daily life as well as be able to relate to others in a way that works better than what they are currently doing. Together we use DBT skills, EMDR, and attachment work to gain that functioning they need.

I have experience treating all ages with an in-depth approach, beginning with meeting you and working to understand the difficulties you are facing. I offer a space that fosters fuller experiencing and understanding of your inner emotional life, including feelings, thoughts, dreams and fantasies. In connection with me, your symptoms and problematic patterns can become understood in new ways, leading to emotional growth and a greater capacity to make meaningful changes. In contrast to a culture that has largely moved towards a 'quick fix' mentality that ultimately fails, I offer an opportunity for deeper exploration and change.

Whether it is wanting help with depression or anxiety, wanting to work on relationship issues or just wanting to live a richer fuller life, therapy can help. As human beings we are faced with a broad range of challenges. Therapy provides the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings that contribute to anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. It is a place to learn about one’s self and to grow. Emotional pain like physical pain is a signal that something needs to be attended to. Sources can often be found in our early life experiences sometimes involving trauma. Once understood the pain will usually begin to subside.

Health, nutrition, self & interpersonal relationships with family, friends & colleagues have a major influence on overall well-being. How do you seek, expect & provide attunement to self & others? Unrecognized intergenerational neuro-relational themes play a part in the manner thru which one seeks life, connection & success. Attachment & neurorelational patterns meant to gain love & closeness can mean one feels known & accepted or sadly invisible & rejected. Tina helps one learn to listen to the self with open-minded curiosity in order to identify relational styles, understanding how they support or hinder one in all areas of life.

When working with individuals, I aim to help them through a collaborative process to understand the underlying issues that are causing them to not live up to their potential. The model which I employ assumes that many of our struggles are connected to conflicts within us of which we are not completely aware. I feel that therapy is most effective when the entire person's personality and history are considered instead of just focusing on current problematic behaviors. My work focuses on recognizing long standing relationship patterns that are troublesome as well as developing a more emotionally stable and adaptive personality.

I work with individuals affected by trauma, difficulties in relationships, depression/post-partum depression, infertility, adoption, parenting, struggles in cultural adaptation and immigration, identity, self-esteem, sexuality, etc.
My work pivots around the basic premise that in order to reach a deeper understanding of oneself and grow through challenges, a space of safety and respectful reflection must be attained. I aim to define a unique relationship where together we can nurture curiosity and harvest increasingly satisfying ways for you to live your life.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
