What suits the needs of one person may not fulfill the needs of a
family
of five.
I believe people are unique and therefore there is no cookie cutter approach to working with clients. My experience is that everyone has the capacity to find their way to solutions and hold the answers to the questions they seek but may need guidance in the process. I believe in the "stool" approach to life. We all have our stool and it has three legs: Physical, Emotional and Spiritual. If any of these legs is shorter or longer than the others we are off balance. The more off balance the stool is, the more uncomfortable we are in life.

You strive to stay afloat and yet find yourself feeling stuck, exhausted, and disconnected from others and from yourself. You attempt to manage your overpowering emotions in both healthy and unhealthy ways and yet you're still overwhelmed and anxious. You long to know that you are enough, to experience peace, and for the important relationships in your life to thrive. Or, perhaps a young person in your
family
is struggling with maladaptive behavior, self-image, or relationships. You long for them to see their innate worthiness and experience joy again.

I work from a
Family
Systems perspective, meaning that it is important to me to know about you, your
family
, friends, work and community.
Most distressed clients that come to see me usually present difficulty being responsive to others. My focus in a session is to structure a safe environment for individuals to take a step back, identify their interaction cycle, and feel comfortable expressing their most vulnerable feelings to others, leading to new and positive interactions. By increasing the emotional responsiveness within the system, members won't unwillingly push others away in their attempts to be closer.

Everyone needs help sometimes. We use the resources, strategies, and supports that we have to work through the difficult times in life, but can reach the point where we need something more to face the challenges that we're up against. If you or someone you love is at a point where life's burdens have become too great, know that you're not alone. My goal as a therapist is to walk with you and help you carry those burdens by offering hope, support, and strategies to face your challenges. There is no better time to seek help.

Marie Hernández-Seltz

I specialize in working with individuals and couples dealing with professional or
family
struggles, relationship discord, fears around intimacy and closeness, lack of motivation, perfectionism, life and career transitions, self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, feelings of emptiness or isolation, trauma, and loss or grief.
Many individuals suffer under the heaviness of their anger, sadness, fear, and pain; others battle to feel anything at all. Self-esteem, relationships, or work can suffer when early cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns are applied to new situations. Although it may be intimidating, exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences within the context of a safe therapeutic relationship can increase your awareness and perception of control over your internal world. Throughout the therapeutic process, you will find your strength, resilience, purpose, and, ultimately, your freedom to shape your external world more effectively.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
