I work with premarital, marital
couples
, and individual adults and adolescents. I believe in the wisdom of clients which allows them to be an active participant in the therapeutic process.
I focus on three main points with my clients.
1. Pay attention to repetitive patterns you are caught up in or that others are caught up in with you, and change anything you can about those patterns.
2. Notice what you are doing when things
are going better, and do more of that.
3. Acknowledge the facts and influence of the past, without letting them determine the present or future.

I have over thirty-five years of experience treating individuals,
couples
, and families dealing with depression, anxiety disorders, marital discord, and family dysfunction. Changing oneself, therefore changing others around you, can lead to happier relationships. Understanding and insight can raise self-esteem. I provide a safe, confidential, and trusting environment to explore one's feelings and consider options to produce different and improved results. Video and telehealth sessions have been added to accommodate the COVID-19 safety protocols.

Marie Hernández-Seltz
PhD, MS
I specialize in working with individuals and
couples
dealing with professional or family struggles,
relationship
discord, fears around intimacy and closeness, lack of motivation, perfectionism, life and career transitions, self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, feelings of emptiness or isolation, trauma, and loss or grief.
Many individuals suffer under the heaviness of their anger, sadness, fear, and pain; others battle to feel anything at all. Self-esteem, relationships, or work can suffer when early cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns are applied to new situations. Although it may be intimidating, exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences within the context of a safe therapeutic
relationship
can increase your awareness and perception of control over your internal world. Throughout the therapeutic process, you will find your strength, resilience, purpose, and, ultimately, your freedom to shape your external world more effectively.

As a psychotherapist I found long ago that folks typically seek assistance in three general areas "problems with
relationship
, problems with trauma, problems with addiction or some combination of the three-so these are the area in which I have chosen to specialize.
I'm Art. I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and I spent 10 years in the military. Since 2007, it has been a privilege to help folks better understand themselves as humans, help them learn to better communicate themselves to others, and get rid of absurd shame and guilt that keeps them from finding joy in life. I work with anyone over the age of 18 in individual, family, or partnership therapy.

couples
with communication issues and rebuild common goals in life.
Life is hard and unpredictable, and we all have struggles within ourselves, with relationships, and with directions in life. As a result, we may experience anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, or simply feeling lost. The recognition of our shared human condition is what motivated me to become a counselor. I bring a wealth of life and professional experiences to the counseling practice with a 20-year career in biotech and business. I believe my life experiences as a parent and professional afford me the broad perspectives to connect with clients and to facilitate personal growth.

Couples
often experience negative patterns of interaction that leave them feeling quite the opposite - misunderstood, frustrated and even lonely.
** ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. Throughout my life, I have experienced and witnessed the healing power of therapy in several different ways. It was through these personal experiences that I learned first hand how instrumental the
relationship
between a client and a therapist can be in facilitating healing and lasting change. These experiences solidified my desire to help others have similar positive experiences. I believe relationships we have with the people we love most, have a profound impact on our happiness, health and ability to thrive. Life can make it hard to take care of those relationships.

Life. Is. Hard. Your
relationship
(s) with your friend, significant other, kid, or parent just do not seem to be working. You've tried so many things and you're utterly exhausted. I feel that pain. The pain that exists when even hoping for a different experience feels too much. It sucks. It's exhausting. It feels like there's nothing you can do and you're doomed to a life of painful and unsatisfactory relationships. When we're at the end of our ropes we often need someone to come alongside and tell us: "It sucks, I know. You're not alone. I'm with you. We'll work through this together." This is the core of what I offer.

Do you ever feel exhausted, anxious or overwhelmed by your relationships and/or stressors in your life? While many people have this experience, no two people experience it the exact same way or for the exact same reasons. Together, we can identify and work toward achieving goals to manage these stressors and lead a more manageable way of life.

I believe people are unique and therefore there is no cookie cutter approach to working with clients. My experience is that everyone has the capacity to find their way to solutions and hold the answers to the questions they seek but may need guidance in the process. I believe in the "stool" approach to life. We all have our stool and it has three legs: Physical, Emotional and Spiritual. If any of these legs is shorter or longer than the others we are off balance. The more off balance the stool is, the more uncomfortable we are in life.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
