Hi there. I’m not sure what has taken place in your life to search for a counselor, but I imagine you as brave for doing just that. The idea of opening the door into change is a risky prospect – what will the journey be like on the other side? Sometimes the unknown in itself is enough to keep us stuck in our current predicament. And yet, there’s still a part of you (however large or small right now) that wonders about something different. I think of that part as Hope. Hope stirs curiosity inside of us and invites us to reimagine our circumstances. Hope has led you here.

Hello! My name is Marissa Lamey and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I joined this field of mental health counseling because I knew I wanted to help, understand, and guide others in the search of discovering themselves. I often tell clients "life sometimes just sucks" and in those "sucky" times, we cope with what we know. Sometimes what we know is not the healthiest form of self-love. We will embark on that journey together in what taking care of you means and what living your life to the fullest can be, no matter what life brings.

Each of us has a unique history that shapes how we make sense of our inner and outer world. I have over 15 years of experience working in mental health with diverse clients who have a variety of concerns they bring to our relationship. Some of the typical issues that I have helped clients address include depression, anxiety, mania, trauma histories, and substance use. In addition, I have a personal passion working with clients who are exploring their gender identity and/or sexuality. Often because of the concerns that my clients bring up, I help people with life changes, career questions, self-esteem, and relationship issues.

My focus is to help youth and teens uncover what they already possess--highlighting their strengths, resilience, and ability to cope with life. Together, your child, your family, and I will work to make sense of troubling experiences and identify and learn coping strategies that allow my clients to realize the power they have in themselves. Using play based interventions, children can communicate their inner world in a way that is natural and feels comfortable to them. Using sand tray, expressive arts, and games, play provides a concrete, action-oriented way for children to work through what they are going through.

Welcome. Something brought you here — maybe your child’s behavior, a teen’s big feelings, your own stress or anxiety, or changes in your relationships or identity. I work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families, offering a supportive space to slow down, be curious, and foster a deeper connection with oneself.

Reaching out when you feel disconnected from yourself and others, or when you feel broken or hurt can be scary. You're not alone in that experience. Reading these words might make your heart race because you're used to picking yourself up and doing it all on your own, or because you might have to process something you've been trying to avoid or forget for a long time. Sometimes we need to ask someone to help us. Help us get up, be next to us on the ground until we're ready to sit and stand, or walk beside us into the dark forest we've desperately been trying to go around. That's what I do.

I specialize in helping critically-thinking women, sexual and gender minorities, and nontraditional couples who have already overcome so much, but find that something keeps holding them back. I help people decidedly outside the mainstream, who aren't looking for a professional to fit them back into conformity. I work best with individuals and couples who already have some practice with self-reflection but you now need a fresh perspective and stronger support. I enjoy helping diverse people, in terms of relationship style, abilities, brain type, or cultural identities. I also specialize in recovery from cults or narcissistic abuse.

Kudos to you for considering counseling and researching your options. Whether you are returning to counseling or just getting started, it can be a daunting task, especially since counselors are not "one size fits all." Taking time to find a counselor that you "click with" can take your session from "okay" to meaningful and fulfilling. Many of my clients report feeling "stuck" in their situations and "tired of pretending to be okay". Some experience dark thoughts that they don't understand or know how to talk about, while others are ready for a change but don't know where to start. I often say, "being human is a messy experience."

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
