When it comes to parents & families, I utilize a Positive Parenting approach in an effort to help parents and children strengthen their relationships and enjoy more positive quality time together.
Above all else, I find the most satisfaction in working with someone who comes with an open mind and willingness. In working with children and teens, I appreciate a strong parental willingness to engage & change. I enjoy working with clients who are seeking fulfillment, improvement, and strengthening their independence, sense of self, and self-worth. I have training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and experience facilitating group therapy as well as individual, and family therapy with individuals of all ages.

I really love helping people learn to practice new ways of thinking and being in the world and in their relationships. Our need to stay busy in our minds and in our bodies in order to escape difficult feelings creates depression and anxiety and keeps us from healing. I help people slow down and learn how to make a genuine connection to their inner world and begin a journey of healing and hope.

My ideal client is someone who is open to exploring various aspects of their life to identify areas of strength and areas of vulnerability where growth will be beneficial. This individual is someone who is open-minded, curious, and ready for change or growth in some aspect of their life. This individual may be seeking out services to support themselves, better support their family members, or to cope with a specific event in their life. I am also Gottman Level I and II trained and use this training in my work with couples.

Throughout our lifetimes, we experience the world--delightful and painful--through our senses. Stress and trauma become stuck in our minds and bodies. A tough protective skin forms that keeps out pain, but also blocks joy. By slowing down and involving our bodies in the work of therapy, the dynamic display of our emotions finds resonance and calming, the mind and body unwind, and insight naturally arises about ourselves, relationships, and experiences. By including body, mind, and spirit, we tend the whole person. By partnering with the natural world, we invite resources that comfort, guide, and inspire us.

As a therapist, I educate on coping skills and provide insight on changing negative/anxious thought patterns. My focus is not to provide every answer but to give you room for reflection and openness to considering/identifying alternative perspectives. I strive to be an excellent critical listener, holding hope for your growth and change while providing non-judgmental acceptance. My work is strengths-based: focusing on positives while balancing/considering current difficulties and desired changes. I feel my strengths lie in treating anxiety, depression and OCD although I provide services for a wide range of diagnoses.

I have experience with anxiety, depression, couple/family/relationship issues, PTSD, substance use, personality disorders, minority stress, spiritual/religious/existential issues, anger management, and co- parenting .
Many come to therapy knowing only that they are struggling to get things done, their relationships have become a source of stress rather than comfort, or they need help processing trauma, loss, or other painful experiences impacting their daily lives. Whatever your circumstances, I strive to help each person or family I work with achieve greater emotional, psychological, and social well-being, while also alleviating symptoms. I use the power of storytelling and understand that each person I work with has many, important stories to tell. I also value and work with each person's nervous system in the healing process.

Awareness has the power to transform, and therapy is a path to becoming more aware. It can help us understand where our patterns come from, how thoughts shape behaviors, what our true needs are and what is getting in the way of what we want. Therapy can help us have more agency, show up differently in our relationships, and find meaning and purpose in life’s challenges. In my work with clients, I draw on a variety of approaches, including psychodynamic theory, somatic practices, and mindfulness.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
