Sleep or Insomnia Therapists in Stillwater, MN
The heart of our work will be using ACT to reduce anxiety (and ACT-I for insomnia).
Your physiological stress response system was built for lions, not 3 a.m. anxiety spirals or a stream of messages that never stop pinging you. It can't tell real danger from an imagined one, so it stays lit up, leaving you looping through the same anxious thoughts even when you're exhausted. If anxiety or sleepless nights have made you feel like you're stuck on the hamster wheel of "tired-yet-wired", that's not your personality. It's biology doing exactly what it evolved to do, but it's just aimed at all the wrong things. And once we understand what it's trying to protect you from, we can start the process of recalibrating it.

Do you feel like you’re stuck in a cycle of "managing" your symptoms rather than actually moving past them? Whether you are navigating the heavy weight of grief, the persistent shadow of anxiety, or the physical toll of chronic pain, you don’t have to settle for just getting through the day. I believe that therapy should do more than just provide a place to talk—it should provide a path to feeling better.
I’m Joe Bauer, and I specialize in helping adults reclaim their lives from stress, fear, and pain.

Disruptions in relationships regularly occur in life and the experience of feeling disconnected is not uncommon. Many of us have experienced children growing older and leaving home, job loss, retirement, frequent arguments with those closest to us, divorce, separation, and death of loved ones. Some of us have experienced life threatening events, serious illnesses and physical losses that result in a dramatic shift on how we fit into the world and in the lives of others. These events can result in a loss of satisfaction in life or at times a loss of hope in having a life worth living.

I hope to be as helpful as possible to all my clients as they struggle with what life brings. I see it as my role as a therapist to come along side my clients as they walk through whatever issue brings them to my office. I have found good therapy starts with understanding the person you desire to support and that is my first goal.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
