Do you feel like you’re stuck in a cycle of "managing" your symptoms rather than actually moving past them? Whether you are navigating the heavy weight of grief, the persistent shadow of anxiety, or the physical toll of chronic pain, you don’t have to settle for just getting through the day. I believe that therapy should do more than just provide a place to talk—it should provide a path to feeling better. I’m Joe Bauer, and I specialize in helping adults reclaim their lives from stress, fear, and pain.

Our lives are deeply influenced by the relationships we have with others and ourselves. I bring a relationship-based perspective to therapy work, whether we are working on communication, family challenges, or self-love. My goal is to create a trusting and non-judgmental space where you feel free to explore yourself and take control of your life’s narrative. Having lived and worked in Ecuador for five years, I have both personal and professional experience in multicultural relationships and environments. I am constantly learning so that I can provide culturally and racially-informed care.

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and creative modalities like Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), music therapy, and mandala drawing, I help clients access emotion, strengthen attachment bonds, and move through stuck patterns toward deeper connection and healing.
Relationships can feel stuck, painful, and hard to untangle — especially when the same patterns keep repeating or something important has been broken. Whether you're working through conflict, rebuilding after infidelity, navigating divorce, or trying to understand your own patterns, this work matters. I specialize in relationships in all their complexity — couples, LGBTQ+ partnerships, polyamorous and non-traditional structures, and individuals exploring how they connect and love.

You've done the work — journaled, talked it through, white-knuckled your way past it. And yet here you are, still carrying it. Maybe it's trauma that won't stay in the past, anxiety that hijacks your body before your brain catches up, or a relationship with substances that keeps complicating everything else. Whether you're an adult who's tried therapy before or a teen who's never quite found the right fit — if you're tired of managing and ready to actually shift something, this is for you.

If you’ve been holding it all together for everyone else, this space is for you. I work with teens (12+) and adults who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected. Many of my clients are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, life transitions, or relationship challenges, alongside whatever else life throws. You may be used to putting your own needs on the back burner. Let's change that together. I tailor our work to fit you, whether that means building practical coping skills, exploring patterns, or creating space to process your experiences in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.

Deciding to change takes courage. Starting therapy takes courage. Many only call a therapist when they have tried everything they know to do. Others are tired of reaching the same crossroads time and again - whether in our personal lives (with issues such as anxiety, depression, fear), in our relationships (communication, intimacy, etc.), or a past experience that keeps one from living the full life once imagined. Whatever brings you to therapy, Conscious Healing Counseling is happy to discuss the many options available to you and how we can be most helpful.

I came into the therapy profession as a second career. I hold a PhD in musicology and spent my earlier years working as a musician and music teacher/professor. I find that many of the same skills I used in music/teaching also apply to therapy. Each individual's goals and path toward healing and growing are unique, and I see my job as being a guide on that path. I believe clients already have the answers inside, and our work together is to uncover the truth that lives within. I lean heavily on understanding family systems and historical patterns that shaped who we are as we work together to decide who we can become.

Music Therapy
How does music therapy work?
A music therapist will begin by assessing the client’s specific needs and getting a sense of their musical ability and interests. Musical training is not required, and clients of all ages can benefit from this type of therapy. The therapist will then make a plan for how to achieve the client’s therapeutic goal(s) using a range of receptive (e.g., listening to a song) and active (e.g., drumming in a group) music therapy techniques.

What are some common music therapy techniques?
Music therapy usually involves listening to music (either live or recorded). Music therapy clients may also make music on popular instruments, such as the piano, guitar, and hand drum, or sing. Sometimes music therapy can include guided imagery. A music therapist may ask clients to improvise on the spot or even compose their own songs. Dancing or moving to music can be an effective intervention to help clients feel more fully grounded in their bodies and remain in the present moment.

How does music therapy help with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
Music therapy can be a valuable creative outlet for clients with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who have trouble putting their painful feelings into words. Listening to music can be relaxing while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. In addition to its mood-boosting effects, music therapy can help clients build resilience and overcome PTSD symptoms that may interfere with their daily lives.

How long does music therapy take?
Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes. They can be scheduled in advance (for example, once a week) or can be done on an as-needed basis. Some clients will only require a handful of music therapy sessions to achieve their goals, while others may need months or longer, depending on their specific concern.
