Life can feel overwhelming, confusing, hopeless, or even scary at times — but you don’t have to navigate those feelings alone. My goal is to be someone who truly listens when it feels like no one else can, and to help guide you toward a calmer, more confident, and more connected version of yourself. I believe in meeting clients exactly where they are and working together at a pace that feels right for you. Vulnerability and authenticity can be difficult, and I deeply value the courage it takes to show up and begin the process of change. I’m here to walk alongside you through that journey.

I offer therapy sessions both in-person at the Highland Park office, or online via Zoom.
I’m deeply committed to helping individuals and couples navigate the complexities of relationships and attachment. Drawing on attachment theory, relational dynamics, and elements of CBT, I guide clients in understanding how past experiences shape present connections. My approach is grounded in empathy and collaboration, offering a supportive space to explore feelings, patterns, and behaviors. I believe healing begins with self-awareness, and that cultivating secure relationships is vital to emotional well-being. Together, we’ll identify attachment styles, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and nurture more meaningful connections.

Hello, my name is Amy Carey. I have been practicing as a therapist for a number of years in the private practice setting. I consider it an honor to collaborate with people as they navigate challenging times, engage in self-reflection, and experience personal growth. While emotional pain is a natural part of being human, it can feel really overwhelming and difficult to experience alone. Therapy offers space to slow down, explore what’s happening beneath the surface, and move toward meaningful resolution.

I am available for online and in-person sessions.
“If the Sun and Moon should ever doubt, They’d immediately go out.” -William Blake. The couplet, from the poem Auguries of Innocence, captures my belief that we provide the light of meaning and purpose to our own lives. The couplet also speaks to the necessity of relationship, in William Blake’s case, between the Sun and the Moon, and in our case, between not only therapist and client, but client and the rest of the support systems around them. It’s my belief that while we are the source of our own solutions, we can’t do it alone; a conviction that starts with the importance I place on my relationships with clients.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.

When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.

How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
