Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists in Sibley County, MN
My name is Iesha McLeod and I am a Licensed Psychologist (LP) based in Minnesota. I received my Doctorate from Albizu University-Miami and have been practicing for 8 years. I enjoy creating an atmosphere where clients can identify and become their true selves. It is my belief that sometimes experiences in life can taint one’s genuine self and cause them to develop defense mechanisms that prevent their true nature from being shared with the world. I have a passion for helping others navigate through life’s experiences and difficulties in order to embrace and nurture their true identity.

I'm eclectic and like to blend concepts from ACT & CBT (which consider our thinking patterns/beliefs/values/actions), Narrative & Person-Centered (you're the expert of your story), Relational & Systemic (how we relate to others in our system is a big part of the story), & Mindfulness.
I help those who are used to being the one others rely on but are quietly exhausted by that role. They're often the organizer, fixer, and emotional anchor and begin to feel something is unsustainable. Life feels too full, too demanding, or too heavy to carry alone anymore. This often means anxiety, overwhelm, grief (recent or long-standing), and relationship strain. They may feel disconnected from their own needs, unsure how to rest without guilt, or caught in patterns of people-pleasing, overfunctioning, or emotional suppression. They need a space of their own to speak honestly without having to manage anyone else's feelings.

Self- acceptance is, for many of us, a lifelong struggle.
I have a special passion for working with fellow queer and trans people, as well as disabled and chronically ill communities. I also have an interest in working with caregivers, neurodivergent folks, and people who want to explore body acceptance/fat liberation. I am COVID-aware, and I wear an N95 in all in-person sessions and run a HEPA air filter.

My approach is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Healing immensely personal, often secret and shameful struggles with body hate, bingeing, purging, restricting, and other related behaviors takes courage and commitment. You may want to change, or have begun the recovery process, but also feel ambivalent and fearful about how and what it means to recover. If this resonates, you are not alone. Recovery is possible and finding peace with food, mind, and body is worth the arduous journey-whether this is your first attempt at treatment or you have completed multiple treatments. I also help caregivers in their role supporting a loved one with an eating disorder.

I will use a combination of neurodiversity affirming practices, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Committment Therapy ( ACT), Brainspotting, and strengths-based practices to support you in meeting your goals.
I am dedicated to providing a safe and accepting space for you or your child to learn skills to cope with emotions before they feel out of control, increase your connection to yourself and others, and meet your emotional needs without shame. Whether you’re experiencing meltdowns, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, self-injury, school refusal, impulsivity, or feeling like you’re “too much” in relationships, I’m here to support you in finding strategies to navigate challenges. I will support you in identifying and advocating for the accommodations you need to safely unmask and meet your needs both in and out of sessions.

For theories, I tend to use CBT, Internal Family Systems therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
It takes a great deal of energy second guessing your decisions and worrying that you are failing yourself and those around you. And once you expend that much "mental energy" spinning your wheels, irritations and feelings of inadequacy increase. It doesn't take long to then feel like you're losing control and wonder what you keep doing wrong. When this happens, we often distance ourselves further, we stop expressing our feelings, and we begin to suffer in silence. And, it can be scary reaching out to a counselor because you really want to connect with them.

I offer therapy services for both children and adults. I aim to support all ages in processing life transitions, anxiety, family conflict, relationship challenges, identity exploration and building social skills. With children, I use play and simple conversation to help them process their experiences and grow, while also supporting parents through the challenges of caring for a child facing mental health concerns. With adults, I create a safe space to explore emotions and beliefs, then examine their impact on well-being. Together, we gently challenge unhelpful patterns to foster clarity, balance, and a higher quality of life.

I am most grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, but I draw from a variety of theories as they each apply to the person in front of me.
I have been working as a psychotherapist since 2016, and I like helping people better manage living out their own sense of a valued life in a world that often doesn't make that easy. Trauma, anxiety, depression, and our own pasts often get in the way, and I help to better approach the internal barriers that often build up around our past, as well as with finding ways to better manage the difficulties life is constantly throwing our way.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
