I work with adolescents and adults who suffer from trauma or identity issues looking to eliminate suicidal thoughts and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts and/or hallucinations. I help clients understand their symptoms and learn methods of coping. I also encourage clients to create meaning for their experiences and grow as a result. I assist clients in assigning meaning to hallucinations and/or intrusive thoughts so that they can use appropriate methods to take back control, including use of client's spiritual beliefs and practices as well as CBT and DBT methods.

I work with individuals and couples who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or worn down, often when sex or intimacy has become stressful instead of connecting. Many people come in feeling embarrassed, discouraged, or unsure how to even start the conversation. In our work, we take shame out of the room and focus on creating a space that feels open, safe, and honest. You don’t need the right words or a clear plan, you can come exactly as you are, and we’ll figure it out together.

Welcome and peace to you as you begin this healing journey. I imagine this may be a trying time as you may be feeling happy some moments while devastated at others. Do not push yourself to resolve whatever hurt you may be carrying at this moment and instead be gentle with yourself and trust in your own extraordinary power to heal. Know that you are not alone as we all struggle with something and we are all working through it. You have taken the first big step and for that I commend you.

Everyone is molded from their experiences, perspectives, and identities which can shaped a sense of reality. Our racial identity, social class, sexuality, and ethnic backgrounds shapes us in developing wisdom/techniques of resiliency to endure distressing moments. These same experiences can become increasingly distressing which can lead us into believing unauthentic beliefs of who we really are. For healing to take place, a requirement of safety/security need to be present in order for authenticity to be formed. Often is the case where strength and growth is developed when faced with the discomforts of the past.

“If the Sun and Moon should ever doubt,
They’d immediately go out.”
-William Blake.
The couplet, from the poem Auguries of Innocence, captures my belief that we provide the light of meaning and purpose to our own lives. The couplet also speaks to the necessity of relationship, in William Blake’s case, between the Sun and the Moon, and in our case, between not only therapist and client, but client and the rest of the support systems around them. It’s my belief that while we are the source of our own solutions, we can’t do it alone; a conviction that starts with the importance I place on my relationships with clients.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
