I believe that every client deserves a therapist who genuinely cares about their well-being, and I do. I have a client-centered approach and understand that we all have different life journeys. I would feel honored to be a part of your journey, working alongside you. I will ensure you feel heard, safe and supported. Psychodynamic
therapy explores how thoughts and feelings that may be outside of our awareness can cause problems such as relationship difficulties, unmet potential, anxiety, depression, low self esteem and other challenges.
Lasting change is possible through a therapeutic relationship that is safe, collaborative, nonjudgmental, and engenders openness and trust. Our work together also values your uniqueness and specific goals. The client-therapist relationship is a chance to try new ways of thinking and feeling, being heard, understood and knowing yourself in a profound, new way.

I offer my clients a compassionate, creative, and collaborative approach in their healing work. I use
psychodynamic
, cognitive behavioral, and integrative therapies encouraging my clients to find meaning in their life's journey and struggles as well as find new ways to care for the self. Although I am a generalist when it comes to working with a variety of diverse clients and issues, I also believe strongly in the mind/body connection and help my clients find ways to reconnect and find balance in their lives. This is especially helpful when dealing with grief, relationship issues, life transitions, or trauma.

I use strategies of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness, within a relational,
psychodynamic
framework.
I work with adult individuals with a variety of issues, however, I specialize in treating the effects of childhood neglect and/or abuse. The impact of trauma is often profound. Pervasive and complex effects can disrupt your sense of self, your life narrative, and your ability to engage with others and the world.

This incorporates aspects of person-centered,
psychodynamic
, solution-focused, existential, cognitive-behavioral, and positive psychology therapies.
I believe we all have the inner power and intuitive knowledge to change, but our intuition can get blocked when strong emotions or past events overwhelm us. Working to establish a partnership of genuineness, trust, and respect for this self-knowledge, I teach tools to calm anxieties, break through fears, renew hope, and increase self-understanding. Mindfulness, relaxation, and visual art techniques, as well as play therapy with children, are often part of this process.

Psychodynamic
therapy goes beyond symptom reduction and heals underlying problems in a way that leads to long-lasting change.
People who know you might be surprised to learn you are searching for a therapist. You’ve achieved academic and professional success and checked most of the boxes that you were told would make you happy. But you’re not. You’re exhausted. And you feel stuck. It’s time to get real with yourself and discover what’s preventing you from having the life you actually desire. A life where you can be your authentic self, enjoy deep connections with others, and live with a sense of meaning.

Personal growth and recovery is an ongoing process of finding the next reachable foothold on the way toward your goal. You have already begun the first step in your work by looking for someone to talk to. We will work together to help you figure out a path to your goals and to find the confidence to lift yourself to the next reachable step along the way. Common issues I work with include depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, concerns related to sexual health or sexual functioning, sexual and gender identity, trauma, and bipolar disorder.

Experience Counts Life makes one consistent demand: that we adjust to change. After 45 years of experience in providing therapy, I have learned many wise approaches to change that seem to help my clients. Throughout these years of providing empathetic, energetic, thoughtful care to my clients, I have also personally seen a lot of change. At the time of my graduate degree in clinical social work from Tulane University in 1974 the therapy world was all about
psychodynamic
therapy. I always appreciate that classical training, but have also evolved to include a more cutting-edge, holistic, client centered approach.

Arizona: ages 0 to 18 in-person sessions. Minnesota: ages 14 and up online sessions. Life events can be stressful. There are moments when we all feel overwhelmed and need support. Therapy provides a safe space to work together in exploring solutions to challenging thoughts, feelings, and situations. Interventions are tailored to individual situations and client needs. This can include use of EMDR for trauma processing and challenging negative cognitions, CBT with a
psychodynamic
and humanistic approach, and play therapy with children.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
